Google plans to turn Android into an "AI system" by deeply integrating Gemini into the platform.

Ahead of the I/O 2026 conference on May 19th, Google introduced a series of new features in Android 17. One of the standout improvements revolves around Gemini Intelligence, transforming Gemini from a typical chatbot into a comprehensive support system.

Gemini Intelligence is expected to be rolled out in phases, starting with the new generation of Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer. Google also plans to expand the system to more Android devices such as smartwatches, cars, smart glasses, and laptops.

Google introduced Gemini Intelligence just weeks before Apple was scheduled to integrate Gemini into the iPhone. This put considerable pressure on Apple, which was already struggling with its strategy of integrating AI into its hardware ecosystem.

Deep integration of AI into Android

Essentially, Gemini Intelligence helps chatbots move beyond the traditional question-and-answer model, becoming independent agents.

According to Google, Gemini can handle many tasks on behalf of users, such as making priority reservations for cycling classes, searching for course outlines in Gmail, and adding favorite books to a shopping cart.

The system provides real-time contextual understanding by scanning the screen or camera. When viewing a shopping list in a notes app, users simply hold down the power button to request Gemini to place the order. If taking a travel advertisement photo, the AI will automatically search for a suitable tour.

Speaking to CNBC , Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, said Google is rebuilding parts of Android for Gemini Intelligence, making it easier for users to complete everyday tasks.

"We are transforming (Android) from an operating system to an AI system," Samat emphasized.

One of the concerns surrounding AI agents stems from their ability to act independently without user permission. According to Google, Gemini only performs tasks when requested and stops when complete. All operations only occur after user confirmation.

Starting in late June, the Chrome browser on Android will feature a sophisticated assistant. This tool can research documents, summarize, and compare web content. The auto-browsing feature also assists users in handling tasks such as scheduling appointments and reserving parking spaces.

Google also plans to improve its autofill feature. Thanks to Gemini Intelligence, the system can retrieve data within applications. When specific information, such as driver's license or passport details, needs to be filled in, the AI will find the appropriate data.

To ensure privacy, users can optionally enable or disable Gemini's Autofill connection in the settings.

Enhance personalization

To bridge the gap between spoken and written communication, Google has added the Rambler feature to its Gboard keyboard. When typing by voice, AI automatically removes filler words (um, uh, like...), filters out the main idea, and organizes it into a concise message.

If the reading process is interrupted by an external conversation, the system will detect and remove the unnecessary dialogue.

Thanks to its multilingual model, Rambler can seamlessly recognize and switch between English and other languages within the same sentence. Google emphasizes that the AI uses only audio for real-time translation; it is not recorded or stored.

On Android 17, users can ask Gemini Intelligence to create widgets. By describing their preferences in natural language, the AI will create widgets to their liking, such as suggesting food menus, updating rainfall amounts, or wind speed while cycling.

These widgets are resizable and can sync across multiple platforms, including Wear OS watches and GoogleBook computers.

"Our goal is to create a highly customizable tool that gathers data from multiple sources on demand to create custom widgets," Mindy Brooks, Vice President of Product Experience Management at Gemini Intelligence, told Wired .

"Breathing heat" on Google

Four months after announcing its agreement to use Gemini technology, Apple faces pressure to improve its Apple Intelligence suite, which has been criticized for being inferior to that of its competitor.

According to CNBC , Google's deeper integration of Gemini into Android demonstrates its ability to integrate a comprehensive AI experience while still giving users a certain degree of control. This approach is similar to Apple's, which consistently emphasizes privacy, hardware integration, and control over the user experience.

Google is also redesigning the Android Auto platform around Gemini. Android Auto is currently available in over 250 million cars. The new update will improve the maps, while Gemini can support tasks such as ordering food while driving.

Besides its AI platform, Android 17 also adds many tools to support creativity, such as simultaneous screen and front-camera recording thanks to the Screen Reactions feature.

According to Wired , Google is also collaborating with Meta to optimize the Instagram interface on tablets and support Ultra HDR. AI tools can enhance image quality and filter noise. The Adobe Premiere video editing app is also coming to Android with specialized filters for short videos.

In terms of digital balance, the Pause Point tool offers a gentle intervention solution. When a distracting app is opened, the system will spend 10 seconds asking for the reason for accessing it. The device will suggest the user take a breath or switch to listening to an audiobook to limit mindless phone use.

File sharing capabilities across platforms have also been upgraded, with Quick Share now supporting direct file sending to iPhones via AirDrop. Data transfer from iOS to Android has been improved to maintain screen layout and personal information. In terms of hardware, Google also unveiled the Googlebook laptop line.
