Joy from bright eyes
"Rich in two eyes, poor in two hands," therefore, having good eyesight is the dream of many people. Mrs. Vu Thi Trinh, from Dong Xuan village, An Truong commune, suffers from cataracts in both eyes. Her right eye was scheduled for surgery in 2024, but due to limited financial resources, she hasn't been able to have surgery on her left eye yet.
"Luckily, my children are union members and knew about the program organized by the City Federation of Labor, so they registered me for free eye surgery. Thanks to the care of the union and the doctors and nurses, I received examination, consultation, and cataract surgery. After the surgery, my eyesight improved significantly; my vision is clearer, my daily life is more convenient, and my spirits are higher," Mrs. Trinh happily said.
The immense joy of receiving free eye surgery seemed to permeate many meals and gatherings of families whose loved ones benefited from the free eye surgery program organized by the Labor Union.
“Previously, my eyesight deteriorated severely, making daily activities very difficult. For me, the most valuable thing the program has brought is not only the material value but also the joy of old age. We truly feel that the Trade Union organization not only cares for its members and workers but also deeply cares for their relatives. When grandparents and parents are healthier and see better, their children and grandchildren can work and contribute to the agency, unit, and city with peace of mind,” shared Mr. Bui Tuan Hoach, residing at 23/81 Le Lai Street, Ngo Quyen Ward.
With its practical and heartwarming significance, more and more people are becoming aware of the program and expressing their desire to participate. According to Ms. Phung Thi Thu Hanh, Vice President of the Trade Union of Nhat Hung Leather and Footwear Co., Ltd., after receiving information about the program from the Hong An Ward Trade Union, the company's trade union officials promptly informed the workers. Due to initial hesitation, only one person registered in the last round. However, seeing that their relative's health has stabilized and improved after participating in the eye surgery program, two more union members have registered so their relatives can benefit from the program in the next round.

Due to the nature of their work, which involves working under artificial light, frequent exposure to computer screens, and intense visual concentration, many workers and laborers experience problems such as dry eyes, eye strain, and decreased vision, thus creating a great need for eye health care.
According to Mr. Vu Ngoc Thuc, Deputy Head of the Trade Union Affairs Department and Head of the Legal Policy and Labor Relations Department (City Federation of Labor), surveys show that workers need regular eye examinations at their workplaces, protective glasses, specialist examinations to treat eye diseases, myopia control, refractive surgery, etc. Based on this reality, the City Federation of Labor organizes in-depth eye examination programs to meet the needs of workers.
The 510 successful cataract surgeries performed without complications in the recent period are concrete evidence confirming the effectiveness and practicality of the program.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Director of System Operations at Hanoi - Hai Phong Eye Hospital, the surgeries are performed using the Phaco method, ensuring safety and adherence to strict medical technical procedures, and guaranteeing the use of high-quality intraocular lenses originating from Europe, Japan, or the United States.
Patients are openly allowed to hold the sealed intraocular lens box until they are taken to the operating room. Before, during, and after surgery, patients receive high-quality medical care, ensuring satisfaction for both patients and their families. All these cases are supported with completely free follow-up visits for 6 months until vision stabilizes, with a commitment to addressing any post-operative issues (if any).
The cataract surgery program brings practical benefits to union members, workers, and their families, thereby contributing to affirming the role and diversity of the trade union's care solutions. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phiệt, Vice Chairman of the City Labor Union, in the coming time, the free cataract surgery program needs to be more widely publicized so that union members and workers can register to participate. In 2026, the committees of the City Labor Union and the Hanoi - Hai Phong Eye Hospital will continue to research and maintain the annual cooperation program, with a more detailed plan, a regular nature, and widespread implementation throughout the city, ensuring the right to benefit from the welfare activities of the Trade Union organization for all union members in the city.
