Mr. Thuan checks for pests and diseases on green-skinned grapefruit

In late July, we had the opportunity to visit the fruit tree growing model of Mr. Thuan's family in zone 8 + 10, Na Duong commune. Beside the green-skinned grapefruit trees with heavy fruit, Mr. Thuan was busy taking care of them and setting fruit fly traps.

Sharing with us about his journey to success, Mr. Thuan confided: Due to difficult family circumstances, after finishing 9th grade, I dropped out of school to stay home and help my parents with farm work. In 2003, I got married. Realizing that the orchard that my parents had previously cared for had degenerated and many trees had died, in 2015, with the capital I had saved, I invested in renovating and planting many new types of fruit trees.

Accordingly, Mr. Thuan has invested in planting 1,000 green-skinned grapefruit trees and 1,000 orange trees on an area of about 3 hectares. Sharing about fruit tree care techniques, Mr. Thuan said: Caring for grapefruit and orange trees requires technical assurance. In particular, after harvesting the fruit, it is necessary to clean the garden, spread lime to prevent pests and diseases, apply NPK compound fertilizer and water regularly so that the trees can recover and flower early. During the growth and development process, the trees are susceptible to planthoppers, stem borers, fruit flies, fungal diseases, etc., so I regularly monitor them to take preventive measures.

Thanks to his hard work and determination, after 5 years of working and gaining experience, the grapefruit garden has developed well, flowering and bearing fruit regularly. Currently, the fruit garden of about 3 hectares has produced stable harvests, on average each year, his family harvests over 20 tons of grapefruit and over 10 tons of oranges. From developing the fruit garden, his family has nearly 300 million VND/year.

From 2020 to present, he continued to improve the land and planted 2,000 more orange trees and 1,000 black canarium trees. Up to now, his family has an area of about 8 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds.

In addition to growing fruit trees, Mr. Thuan's family also invested in planting and caring for over 15 hectares of eucalyptus forest. After 6 years of care, in 2024, his family harvested wood and earned more than 1.5 billion VND. Currently, his family continues to clear the ground cover, prune, and care for the eucalyptus forest.

Along with developing the model of planting forests and fruit trees, Mr. Thuan also invested in 2 excavators to undertake projects in the commune and neighboring communes. Accordingly, he undertakes construction projects and traffic projects according to the needs of the people. From receiving the leveling of projects, Mr. Thuan has an additional income of 300 million VND/year.

Not keeping his success to himself, in recent years, Mr. Thuan has regularly shared his experiences with other households in need of techniques for fruit tree care and forest planting. To continue expanding and developing his family's economic model, Mr. Thuan is currently investing in building a barn to raise sows and pigs for meat with a barn size of about 300 m2. From developing livestock, he will utilize manure to care for fruit trees.

Mr. Vi Van Thuc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Na Duong commune commented: Mr. Nong Tien Thuan not only actively participates in local movements and activities but is also a typical farmer, a bright spot of the commune in pioneering good economic performance with a comprehensive economic model. In 2024, Mr. Thuan proactively borrowed 2 billion VND according to Resolution No. 15 dated July 17, 2021 of the Provincial People's Council on amending and supplementing a number of articles of Resolution No. 08 dated September 10, 2019 of the Provincial People's Council on special policies to encourage investment, develop cooperation, link production and consumption of agricultural and rural products in the province in the period of 2020 - 2025 to invest in developing and expanding his family's economic model.

With this model, every year, Mr. Thuan's family has created seasonal jobs for 8 to 10 workers in the area and commune, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
