The essay about balut eggs is about an artist whose daughter participated in a writing contest at school. Thanks to that, he learned about the essay of his daughter's classmate, mentioning her mother who sells balut eggs.

In the boy’s essay, there was a very detailed description of how to prepare balut eggs, how to make them delicious, rich…, showing the boy’s concern for his mother’s livelihood. That sincere essay brought back memories of his father and he suddenly realized: that boy was braver than he himself was when he was that age.

Sharing about the idea of the work, Tran Khac Khoan said that throughout the work, he did not use big words, but instead used honesty and everyday life. The message of honesty was also emphasized through the father's words: "Painting is like telling a story. Each story told is a life we are living. Whether painful, happy, lost or fulfilled, we must dare to live that life. When we live, the most important thing is to always be honest."

Tran Khac Khoan is a graphic designer, creating comics is just a job in his spare time. As Khoan said, since he was a child he loved drawing comics and drew a lot but never had a complete work. The essay about balut eggs was the first time he completed a 50-page story, done within a month, right at the time when he had some free time. And when he heard about the contest, he sent it with the thought: "Why don't I try?".

After the competition, Khoan was one of the artists invited to France to attend the "Angoulême Comics Festival", one of the largest comics festivals in the world . This is considered an extremely special and memorable experience for Khoan.

What impressed him most was the way comics were honored as a true art form. From large-scale exhibitions, author and reader exchanges, to in-depth seminars, all showed respect and serious investment in comics. There, comics are not only for children or entertainment, but also have cultural, historical and social depth.

“I clearly feel the interest and curiosity of international friends towards Asian comics, including Vietnamese ones. That is a great motivation for me to continue creating and bringing stories and images close to Vietnamese culture to readers around the world,” Khoan shared.

Also at this festival, Khoan noticed an interesting point, the readers here are extremely diverse, from children to the elderly. They are passionate and love comics, considering it a real art, no less than cinema or literature. That makes him feel more confident that comics can overcome all boundaries of age, language and culture.
