The lock screen customization feature in iOS 18 brings many new and useful features, especially with iPhone control options. However, the process of changing the wallpaper is currently facing some inconveniences that make many users feel dissatisfied.

Problems with lock screen customization
Apple has provided a flexible lock screen customization system, allowing users to switch between different profiles, from wallpapers to widgets to Focus mode. This is really convenient as you can set up multiple lock screens for different situations, such as work or play.
However, the current way it works introduces a lot of unnecessary complexity for people who just want to change their wallpaper quickly. The overly detailed customization system makes changing the wallpaper a cumbersome process, as users have to reset all their widgets, clocks, and controls each time.
Lack of simplicity in personalization
Currently, the lock screen setup process in iOS 18 can be considered an advanced mode, with Apple allowing users to adjust every single detail. However, what many users want is a simpler mode, allowing them to just change the wallpaper without having to reconfigure all the other elements.
One solution Apple could consider is providing the ability to set defaults for lock screen elements like the clock, widgets, and controls. This would make it easier for users to try out new wallpapers without having to worry about resetting everything.
Preferences change wallpaper, widgets remain the same
Personally, I change the wallpaper on my iPhone regularly, but other lock screen customizations remain pretty much the same. For example, I always like to keep the following configuration:
- Top widget: Weather widget above the clock
- Clock: Standard font with thinnest thickness and vibrant colors
- Widget grid: No widgets below the clock
- Controls: Flashlight on the left, car app on the right
Every time I try a new wallpaper, I have to reset these settings. This process has become so familiar that I can do it automatically, but it's clearly not a good user experience.
Complicated process
For example, to change the control from the Camera to the Car app, I had to go through a complicated series of steps: long-press the lock screen, select "Customize", delete the camera control, add the shortcut control, select the Car app, and save the new configuration. While these steps aren't too difficult, it's clear that the process could be greatly simplified.
While the lock screen customization features in iOS 18 are extensive and useful, Apple needs to provide a simpler option for users. Just changing the wallpaper without having to reset all the widgets and controls would improve the user experience. In particular, if Apple allowed users to set a default lock screen configuration for each new wallpaper, the process of personalizing the iPhone would become much easier and more convenient.
