Apple is 'rebuilding' its AI from scratch.

Amidst its significant lag behind in the vibrant AI chatbot market, Apple may be planning to build its own tool, aligning with the company's "not lead, but best" philosophy. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman , Apple established the Answers, Knowledge and Information (AKI) team earlier this year with the mission of developing a "lean competitor to ChatGPT."

The establishment of AKI marks a strategic shift from Apple's previous approach to artificial intelligence, where the company partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri instead of developing its own AI chatbot.

Now, Gurman suggests that AKI will develop internal AI services, offering a "new search experience similar to ChatGPT," capable of gathering web data to answer questions. These new features could appear as a standalone application, as well as supporting AI features for Siri, Spotlight, and Safari.

The team, led by Robby Walker, who previously oversaw Siri, recruited personnel with experience in search algorithms and search engine development.

Besides establishing the AKI team, Apple has encountered several challenges in the development of artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company announced a delay in the release of the new Siri, touted as a significant upgrade with AI support, only stating that the product would launch "next year".

However, Apple recognizes the need to accelerate its Apple Intelligence program to remain competitive. During the third-quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook announced his willingness to acquire other companies to speed up its AI development roadmap.

Apple once led the field by integrating automated models and deep learning into iOS and macOS. However, it was slow to adapt to the boom in language modeling and chatbots. The company refused to use the term artificial intelligence in its products while competitors were racing to do so. Its attempt with Apple Intelligence was one of the company's biggest failures in recent years. The product was delayed for years, while the supporting tools were impractical.
