With Apple lagging far behind in the bustling AI chatbot market, it may be planning to build its own tool, in line with the company's "not first, but best" philosophy. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman , Apple created the Answers, Knowledge and Information (AKI) team earlier this year with the task of developing a "lean ChatGPT competitor."
The creation of AKI marks a strategic shift from Apple's previous stance on artificial intelligence, when the company partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri instead of developing an AI chatbot itself.
Now, Gurman says AKI will develop internal AI services that will deliver “a new ChatGPT-like search experience” that will be able to crawl the web to answer questions. The new features could come as a standalone app, as well as support AI features for Siri, Spotlight, and Safari.
The team is led by Robby Walker, who oversaw Siri, and is recruiting for people with experience in search algorithms and search engine development.
In addition to the AKI team, Apple has had some difficulties in developing artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company announced a delay in releasing a new Siri, which was introduced as a powerful upgrade with the help of AI, only saying that the product would launch "next year".
However, Apple is aware of the need to accelerate its Apple Intelligence program to stay competitive. During the Q3 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said he was open to acquiring other companies to accelerate its AI development roadmap.
Once a leader in this field by integrating machine learning and deep learning models into iOS and MacOS, Apple was slow to move into the big language model and chatbot craze. The company refused to use the term artificial intelligence on its products when competitors were racing. The effort with Apple Intelligence was one of the company's biggest failures in years. The product was years late, while the accompanying tools were impractical.
