Apple has released public betas for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and other next-generation software updates. Along with other changes and fixes, these new builds bring Apple Intelligence notification summaries to news apps.
Beta 4 of iOS 26 was released by Apple on July 22, 2025.
Apple disabled news notification summaries in the iOS 18.3 update in January. Inaccurate summaries circulating on social media have led to complaints from news outlets to Apple, especially after one summary said that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had committed suicide (he did not and is still alive).
After installing the new update, users of Apple Intelligence-compatible devices will be asked to enable or disable three main categories of notifications: notifications for “News & Entertainment” apps, notifications for “Media & Social” apps, and notifications for all other apps. The operating system will list sample apps based on the apps you currently have installed on your device.

All of Apple Intelligence's notification summaries are still listed as "beta," but Apple's main change here is a big red disclaimer when you enable the News & Entertainment notification summaries.
The notice notes that “summaries may change the meaning of the original headlines.” The notices also have a special “summary by Apple Intelligence” annotation to further distinguish them from regular, unaltered notices.
Apple Intelligence is also said to see internal improvements in the new updates, compared to the first-generation version in iOS 18. Apple executives have talked about fundamental architectural improvements that will allow them to eventually roll out a new version of Siri.
In any case, the disclaimer states that Apple's fix includes warning users about potentially getting inaccurate summaries and allowing them to turn off news summaries, rather than guaranteeing that summaries will always be accurate.
