Bloomberg sources revealed that the information will be displayed when the iPhone is locked and horizontal, operating similarly to smart screens from Google and Amazon. Apple wants its smartphones to maximize their effectiveness when placed on the user's desk or shelf.
The feature is part of iOS 17, which is expected to be released this fall. The iPhone maker will preview the platform at WWDC 2023, which takes place on June 5.
While new to iPhone users, this interface is familiar to Android users as it has been around since 2019. Amazon has long offered a similar option on tablets through its Echo Show smarthome device emulation mode.
Apple will use light text on a dark background to make it easier for users to see information. It builds on last year's lock screen widget in iOS 16. The feature in iOS 16 shows some information like stock prices, news, and temperature below the time.
The company is also working on a landscape interface for iPad, but progress is slower. The iPhone lock screen has yet to make it to iPad. Home screen widgets from iOS 14 won't arrive on the tablet until iPadOS 15.
With iOS 17, the world's largest technology company also plans major changes to the Wallet app and location services. There will be a new note-taking app for users. Apple also plans to bring the Health app to the iPad.
Programs like SharePlay, AirPlay are getting upgraded. Apple has been negotiating with hotels and other venues that provide TVs and speakers to make it easier for users to stream video and audio to devices they don't own.
