Scientists placed approximately 140 traps in various areas around Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego province. Each day, 40–50% of the rats were caught in the traps. However, none of the cases involved long-tailed rats, the species identified as the vector for the Andean Hantavirus.
The Andes strain of Hantavirus has only been recorded in some areas of southern Argentina and Chile, and is the only known strain capable of human-to-human transmission. The virus is primarily transmitted through contact with the waste, urine, or saliva of infected rats.
According to the plan, the collected samples will be sent to Buenos Aires for analysis, and results are expected within the next three weeks.
Researchers said the captured rats were primarily Abrothrix hirta and Abrothrix olivacea – common species but with a low risk of causing serious disease outbreaks.
