Long reliant on migrant workers to supply its domestic market - now considered one of the tightest in the world - Australia has embarked on a migration overhaul to speed up the arrival of skilled workers and make it easier for them to become permanent residents.

“We need to get migrant worker numbers back to sustainable levels and we will be releasing details on that this week,” Prime Minister Albanese told reporters in Sydney.
Mr Albanese said he wanted a system in place that would allow Australia to access the skilled workers it needs.
In October 2023, Australia's centre-left Labor government pledged to tackle abuse of the visa system to crack down on people trafficking and other forms of organised crime.
It has previously said the visa process for skilled professionals would be made faster and easier, and that steps would be taken to "retain" international students.
The problem of the Australian labor market, recently mentioned by Asia-Pacific Human Resources Magazine in October 2023, said that skilled migrants in Australia currently face recruitment barriers, leading to a surplus of highly skilled taxi and delivery drivers, while lacking human resources in essential occupations.
Skilled migrants to Australia and students who stay in Australia after their studies often end up in jobs below their skill level due to barriers in the job application process, said June Tran, a lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne. According to the study, applicants’ lack of understanding of Australian registration requirements, such as a cover letter and addressing key selection criteria, was one of the barriers noted.
According to Ms. June Tran, skilled migrants end up taking jobs below their skills and qualifications simply because they want to make money to support themselves and their families as well as to deal with recruitment practices that are unfriendly to skilled migrants.
