Accordingly, developers, startups, entrepreneurs and businesses, as well as government, educational and non-profit organizations, will have more options to run applications and serve their end users from AWS data centers located in Malaysia.
The construction and operation of the new AWS Region is estimated to contribute approximately US$12.1 billion to Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP), supporting an average of over 3,500 full-time jobs annually across various businesses between now and 2038. These jobs, encompassing construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other sectors within the country's broader economy , will be part of the AWS supply chain in Malaysia.
Mr. Tengku Zafrul, Minister for Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) of Malaysia, said: “The launch of AWS Region in Malaysia brings Malaysian organizations and businesses of all sizes access to new and emerging technologies, boosting our country’s digital innovation capabilities. This is a significant step toward realizing the vision in Malaysia’s new Industrial Master Plan 2030 to build a highly developed, innovative, prosperous, inclusive and sustainable economy.”
He also argued that the transformative power of digitalization, cloud computing, and AI is the main driver behind Malaysia's efforts to become a manufacturing and services hub in Asia. As the largest investment by an international technology company in Malaysia, the AWS Region will help Malaysia maintain its national competitiveness globally.
Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, said: "The new AWS Region in Malaysia enables organizations in the APAC region to fully leverage the potential of the world's largest and most trusted cloud platform, helping customers deploy cutting-edge applications with a range of AWS technologies such as AI and ML. Malaysia's rapidly growing digital economy demands access to secure, flexible, and sustainable cloud infrastructure.”
Following the launch of the AWS Asia-Pacific Region (Malaysia), AWS now has 108 Availability Zones across 34 geographic regions and has also announced plans to launch an additional 18 Availability Zones and 6 AWS Regions in Mexico, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan (China), Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
AWS offers the most diverse and professional portfolio of services on the market, including analytics, computing, databases, IoT, AI generation, mobile services, storage, and many other cloud technologies.
As part of its long-term commitment, AWS plans to invest approximately $6.2 billion (equivalent to MYR 29.2 billion) in Malaysia by 2038.
Malaysian telecommunications provider CelcomDigi is using Amazon Bedrock to access multiple high-performance platform models (FMs) and large language models (LLMs), enabling the creation of a closed, enterprise-wide AI testing environment (sandbox) for rapid, secure innovation for its individual and enterprise customers.
CelcomDigi CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi said: “With the support of AWS infrastructure and AI services empowering our business support systems and consumer applications, we are working to improve operational efficiency and deliver a better customer experience.”
Meanwhile, Pei-Si Lai, CEO of GXBank – Malaysia's first digital bank with a mission to enhance sustainable financial literacy for all Malaysians – said: "Thanks to building on the AWS cloud, we were able to launch GXBank within 16 months, serving over 750,000 customers with 13 million transactions in just 8 months.”
Lim Chee How, Founder and CEO of Tapway, a Malaysian local startup and leading AI solutions provider in Southeast Asia, said: "The arrival of the AWS Region in Malaysia helps us further reduce latency in accessing critical cloud services, enhancing and expanding our rapidly growing AI vision platform while ensuring data compliance."
