With 4.4/5 stars, beef stew (bo kho) ranked highest among the three Vietnamese dishes (position 28) in Taste Atlas's list published at the end of April.

"Beef stew is a popular breakfast dish in Southern Vietnam, eaten on its own or with bread, noodles, and often served with herbs and onions. Ingredients include beef, carrots, lemongrass, cinnamon, chili peppers, black pepper, garlic, and shallots simmered until tender. The broth is thick, spicy, and aromatic," Taste Atlas writes.

The exact origins of beef stew are unknown, but it's a dish influenced by both Eastern and Western cuisines. In rural areas of Vietnam, it's often spicier than in urban areas.

Another popular breakfast dish in the South on the list is broken rice (com tam), ranked 75th. Com tam typically consists of pork marinated with pepper, garlic, and fish sauce, served with pork skin, egg, pork sausage, and pickles, all drizzled with a thick fish sauce.

Bun bo Hue is the only Vietnamese dish on the list, ranking 53rd. Bun bo Hue is described as "distinctive, spicier, and more flavorful than many other Vietnamese dishes, with a rather complex preparation method." Common additions to the bowl of noodles include sliced beef or crab cakes. Many believe that Bun bo Hue became popular due to influences from royal court cuisine .

"A delicious and affordable breakfast dish," commented a food website about beef noodle soup.

Taste Atlas is the world's largest food guide. The list of "100 Best Breakfast Dishes in the World" has 40,849 user reviews, of which 23,691 were deemed valid by the system. At the top of the list is kahvaltı from Turkey, a traditional breakfast with cheese, olives, bread, vegetables, eggs, and tea.
