At the meeting with the leaders of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee on the afternoon of June 10, EVN proposed expanding and increasing the capacity of 3 existing hydropower plants, namely Lai Chau , Ban Chat, and Huoi Quang, with a total additional capacity of 770 MW. At the same time, investing in 4 floating solar power projects on hydropower reservoirs with a total capacity of 462 MWp/420 MW.
Specifically, Lai Chau Hydroelectric Plant with an existing capacity of 1,200 MW will be expanded by 400 MW; Ban Chat Hydroelectric Plant with an existing capacity of 220 MW will be expanded by 100 MW; Huoi Quang Hydroelectric Plant with an existing capacity of 520 MW will be expanded by 260 MW.

EVN leaders also requested Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee to continue to create favorable conditions and support EVN and its member units in investing in the construction of power source and grid projects, and electricity supply in the province.
Propose that the Provincial People's Committee consider adding and updating power source projects proposed by EVN to the province's planning, including recommending to accelerate the investment progress of floating solar power projects on the reservoirs of Lai Chau, Huoi Quang, and Ban Chat hydropower plants to the period 2025 - 2030.

Currently, the total capacity of hydropower sources operating in Lai Chau province is 3,135 MW, including hydropower plants managed by EVN: Lai Chau (1,200 MW), Ban Chat (220 MW), Huoi Quang (520 MW) and other medium and small hydropower plants with a total capacity of about 1,195 MW connected to the distribution grid.
In addition, there is about 150 MW from small hydropower plants in Yen Bai and Lao Cai areas, generating power to the system via the Lai Chau grid.
Agreeing with the policy of developing floating solar power along with the expansion projects of 3 hydropower plants, Mr. Le Van Luong, Chairman of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee, said that he will coordinate with EVN to implement the steps to adjust the planning. At the same time, the province will establish working groups to support compensation and site clearance for EVN's energy development projects in the area.
In Lai Chau, the 500 - 220 kV power grid has also been built and firmly consolidated, including the 500 kV Lai Chau Hydropower - 500 kV Lai Chau - Son La transformer station lines, along with the 220 kV Muong Te - Lai Chau, Than Uyen - Ban Chat - Huoi Quang lines.

The transformer stations (TSAs) including Lai Chau 500 kV TSAs (total capacity of 1,400 MVA), Muong Te 220 kV TSAs (500 MVA), Than Uyen 220 kV TSAs (500 MVA) have made important contributions to power transmission. For the 110 kV grid, the province currently has 4 110 kV TSAs with a total capacity of 157 MVA.
Regarding electricity consumption, Lai Chau's commercial electricity grew by an average of 7.89% per year in the 2021-2024 period, showing high economic growth and high demand for electricity. The load capacity (Pmax) also grew by an average of 2.9% per year in the 2021-2024 period.
By the end of 2024, Lai Chau Electricity Company (under the Northern Power Corporation) will have sold electricity directly to 100% of households in the province.
By the end of May 2025, the whole province had 106/106 communes supplied with national grid electricity (100%), 97.88% of households (107,814/110,154 households) and 99.16% of villages (948/956 villages) had electricity. This is a clear demonstration of EVN's commitment to bringing electricity to remote areas, improving people's lives.
EVN is also very active in social security activities in Lai Chau. In the period of 2009 - 2020, EVN contributed about 710 billion VND to support 3 poor districts of Than Uyen, Tan Uyen and Phong Tho according to Resolution 30a of the Government, along with 50 billion VND to build the Nam Nhun District Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.
From 2021 to present, the Group continues to support about 3.1 billion VND to the Poor People's Fund and the province's program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.
