On the afternoon of June 7, Dr. Duong Thanh, Director of Ba Ria Hospital, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, said that patients using hemodialysis services at Ba Ria Hospital will have to pay 950,000 VND/time after deducting health insurance.
Previously, an anonymous patient currently undergoing dialysis at Ba Ria Hospital, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, reported that the fee for dialysis services outside of business hours at this hospital was too high, beyond the patient's ability to pay, causing them many difficulties.
This patient said: “People on dialysis like us are very poor, we have to worry about our next meal, we don’t have the health to earn money and have to rely on our relatives. We sold all our chickens, ducks, pigs, cows and land to cover the cost of dialysis, leaving only our house.”
This patient registered for regular dialysis at Ba Ria Hospital but there was no more space. He also added that when Ba Ria Hospital announced the night dialysis service from 9pm to 1am, in addition to the amount paid by the Health Insurance Fund, the hospital charged an additional service fee of nearly 1.2 million VND/time.
Along with some other costs during the dialysis process, patients have to pay nearly 1.5 million VND/time. On average, each month, patients need dialysis from 8-12 times, equivalent to a cost of about 10-18 million VND.
This patient also said that people with dialysis are already in a difficult situation, they are not the ones for whom the hospital should charge for the service. This fee is beyond the ability of many patients, especially those in difficult circumstances, with poor health, and no longer able to work.
Patients want Ba Ria Hospital to review and reduce the cost of artificial kidney dialysis services so that people can receive long-term treatment.
In response to the feedback from dialysis patients, Mr. Nguyen Tan Ban, Director of the Department of Health of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, said he had received feedback from patients about Ba Ria Hospital organizing artificial kidney dialysis services from 9pm to 1am every day at a rather high price.

The provincial Department of Health has also issued a document requesting Ba Ria Hospital to receive public opinions. At the same time, it will review and reconsider the price of hemodialysis services currently applied at the unit based on current regulations.
In case of adjustment, Ba Ria Hospital will study suitable options to facilitate patients' access to treatment services.
In addition, the provincial Department of Health also issued a document requesting hospitals and medical centers in the province to review the demand for hemodialysis in the province. In particular, Ba Ria Hospital, Vung Tau Hospital and Xuyen Moc District Medical Center (3 units currently performing hemodialysis in the province) are required to review the demand of people who have registered for hemodialysis at the unit, and assess the ability to provide services.
The Department also requested the Medical Centers of Chau Duc and Xuyen Moc districts to urgently coordinate to install and operate dialysis machines from the investment source in 2025. Prepare facilities and personnel to put into operation as soon as the equipment is added.
Along with that, based on the data provided by Ba Ria Hospital, Vung Tau Hospital and Xuyen Moc District Medical Center, the Department also requested the Professional Department to advise and develop a plan to regulate hemodialysis for people in the province to create the best conditions for people in need of hemodialysis....
In response to patient feedback, speaking with reporters, Dr. Duong Thanh, Director of Ba Ria Hospital, said that currently the Blood Filtration Department, Ba Ria Hospital has 48 machines running periodically, 7 online HDF machines serving blood ultrafiltration for patients on periodic dialysis.
The department is currently receiving a total of 270 patients undergoing regular dialysis, with 120 still not scheduled, including 57 people who regularly require emergency dialysis.
Although the hospital has increased the number of dialysis sessions per day and opened additional schedules on Saturdays, it still cannot meet all treatment needs; forcing some patients to move to other provinces to perform dialysis.
This not only wastes time and travel costs, but also affects the patient's health. In addition, when performing dialysis services at other medical facilities, patients still have to pay according to the requested fee.
Faced with that reality, many patients wish to have dialysis in the evening or at night to make the treatment process more convenient.
To meet this need, Ba Ria Hospital has implemented an on-demand hemodialysis service outside of office hours (from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day). Accordingly, the price for one on-demand hemodialysis session is more than 1.7 million VND, and patients must pay nearly 1.2 million VND after deducting the portion covered by health insurance.
“In response to patient feedback, the hospital has reviewed all on-demand dialysis prices with the aim of reducing costs for patients. Through the review, direct costs such as drugs, chemicals, blood, blood products, raw materials, equipment, etc. are costs that cannot be reduced. However, the hospital has adjusted to reduce other costs such as labor costs, management costs, etc. Because these are working hours at night and early morning, if the cost is too low, medical staff will not be able to participate, and patients will still have to go to another province to perform dialysis at the requested price. After the adjustment, the service price for 1 hemodialysis session will be more than 1.5 million VND/session. After deducting the health insurance payment, patients will have to pay 950,000 VND/session,” Dr. Duong Thanh added./.
