Timely first aid helps girl overcome critical condition
Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online on May 13, doctor Pham Tien Manh recounted how he accidentally gave first aid to a girl who had a traffic accident on the evening of May 7 at Mo Lao intersection (Ha Dong, Hanoi ).
Doctor Manh recalled that it was around 10:30 p.m., he and his family were returning home after playing sports . When approaching Mo Lao intersection, they suddenly saw an accident between two motorbikes, the girl fell hard under the car.
Immediately turning on the signal, pulling the car over, Mr. Manh went to check on the victim's condition. The girl was now unconscious, her limbs were convulsing, her mouth was foaming, her eyes were not closed, and blood was oozing from the corner of her mouth - a typical sign of a seizure after a head injury.
Mr. Manh immediately opened the victim's jaw to clear the airway, and asked his wife to open the trunk to get the first aid kit he always had ready. He used gauze to place in the mouth to prevent tongue biting, and pressed the philtrum to help the victim quickly regain consciousness.
"Because the victim bit too hard, my finger still hurts today," he said.
After about 10 minutes, the victim gradually regained consciousness, opened his eyes, stopped convulsing and began to respond to questions. Upon further examination, Dr. Manh discovered a bleeding wound on his forearm from hitting the road. He continued to disinfect, bandage and raise the victim's head to help him breathe, and asked people to call an ambulance.
"In first aid on the street, the first thing is to help the victim clear their airway. If the seizure persists, the brain can be seriously affected," Dr. Manh shared.
About 15 minutes later, the ambulance arrived. Dr. Manh quickly discussed the victim's condition with the medical team before the girl was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.

The next morning, he learned that a video of him performing first aid on the side of the road had been shared on social media, attracting thousands of complimentary comments.
"I also received a message from the victim's family thanking them and informing them that the girl's health had stabilized. Receiving a message from the victim's family, I felt really relieved. I hope she will fully recover," he said.
The car had a strange sign that said: "I am a doctor, if you need help, please stop my car."

Doctor Pham Tien Manh was also known to the online community in 2024 thanks to the special message on the back of his car: "I am a doctor, if you need help, please stop my car". The story behind this message also touched many people.
He told of a cousin who had an accident while partying late at night. Because no one noticed it early, he was taken to the emergency room at dawn, resulting in serious complications. From then on, Dr. Manh decided to put a note on his car, hoping that if anyone needed help on the way, he would be willing to stop and help.
Not only the words on the back of the car, he always prepares a first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic alcohol, pain relievers, splints... in his car to prepare for any unexpected situations.
"I've seen a few accidents over the past year, but when they stopped, everyone was fine. At that time, I felt lucky that everyone was okay.
Or some passersby saw the words and felt very excited, when they passed by, people left "hearts" and "likes" which made me feel happy too," said Dr. Manh.
Although he received many thanks and encouragement from the community, he was also often mocked and accused of "pretending".
"There are times when I feel sad, but I believe I did the right thing. No one expects to have to ask for help on the road, but if needed, I am ready.
In particular, in recent days, medical staff have been condemned for not accepting emergency care. I hope that "one bad apple cannot spoil the barrel", but my actions will help the community have more faith in the medical profession," Mr. Manh shared.
