Wondering whether or not to re-examine literature subject

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/06/2023

According to data released by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the average score for the 10th grade literature exam fluctuated between 5-7, the highest score was 9.25 and there were 8 candidates with a score of 0. Candidates can submit an appeal application from June 21-23.

Fear of 10th grade exam scores dropping after review

Wanting to retake the exam to get a safe score and increase the chance of passing the first choice, QN (former student of Le Loi Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City) is afraid that his exam score will be reduced after the retake.

"Some people around me agree, some do not support the re-examination, so I am very confused. I put all my heart into my work, so I am quite disappointed when my score is not as expected. In addition, because my handwriting is not beautiful, I am also a bit lacking in confidence. If the work is quite good but the layout and writing are not clear and distinct, there is still a risk of a lower score. This is also a factor that makes me consider the re-examination," QN wondered.

Placing his first choice on Hung Vuong High School, NTT (former student of Tran Boi Co Middle School) decided to re-examine the literature subject after knowing the results.

TT said: "In 4 semesters, I always achieved 7.5 - 8.5 points in literature. After the 10th grade exam, I checked the results and got all the reading comprehension parts correct, without going off topic. I also tried to write 10 pages of paper and expected to get over 7 points, but the result was quite low compared to my goal."

This student shared that the test had few basic errors so he expected the review result to be from 7.25 to 8 points.

Do not re-mark when you are unclear about your work.

Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong, a literature teacher at Khanh Binh Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City, noted that if students want to re-examine, they need to discuss thoroughly with subject teachers, present their answers as well as re-solve the questions so that teachers know the situation. From there, teachers can give appropriate advice and suggestions to students.

"Students should check and review the answers carefully for the parts they are unsure about before reviewing. After re-solving the test and comparing it with the published test results, if the score is about 1 point higher, they should review. For differences of 0.25-0.5, the score will likely remain the same or there is a risk that the score will decrease," she said.

However, Ms. Thuong shared that if students are confident and certain about their work, even if the score difference is small, they should still review it so they don't regret it. Sometimes, 0.25 points can greatly affect and decide whether they pass or fail their desired application.

According to Ms. Thuong, cases that should be reviewed are students who are sure about their test, check the answers and see a big difference in scores; students who are wavering and really need more points to pass a certain wish that they feel they have a high chance of doing.

The case where students should not have their test reviewed is when they are unclear about their own test results, and after the test they cannot remember what they wrote in the test, making it difficult to compare it with the official answer, Ms. Thuong advised.

"Besides, if you feel that your score is at a safe level and can pass your target, then there is no need to re-examine to prove your ability in that subject when your score is not as expected," she advised.

In response to opinions that reviewing literature exams has many risks and can easily lower scores, she shared that whether or not to review is always a topic of concern for candidates every year. "When re-scoring, there will be many examiners, who will grade more carefully, so students are afraid of losing their scores. But in reality, in the years I was in charge, there were a few students who requested to review and increase their scores. Some students got 2 points more for a number of reasons such as they did the questions out of order, did them on the back of the paper so the examiner missed them, or there was an error in the total score," she said.

According to Ms. Thuong, this year's literature exam is very open, creating conditions for candidates to express their views and creativity. However, some students have not identified the main focus, so they get off topic or get stuck in the social argument question, misidentifying the problem, so their scores are not high. In addition, the literature argument question in previous years has excerpted material from the exam, which helps students to do the test more easily. This year, however, there is no excerpted material, so some students who do not know poetry will have difficulty.
