VTC News online newspaper continuously updates the latest World Cup 2026 rankings according to the FIFA website. As of now, the rankings of the teams in Group G are as follows.

According to the 2026 World Cup format , teams will play a round-robin tournament in the group stage to determine rankings. The top two teams in each group and the eight best third-placed teams will qualify for the Round of 16.
In the event of a tie in points among multiple teams in the group stage, the tie-breaking criteria used for ranking are head-to-head performance (calculated separately based on points, goal difference, and the number of goals scored in direct matches between the tied teams). If two teams are tied in all of the above criteria, the organizers will consider the goal difference and the total number of goals scored in all three matches.
When all other tie-breaking criteria are irrelevant, the teams are ranked according to their position on the latest FIFA World Rankings.

New Zealand

New Zealand is ranked 85th in the FIFA rankings. This is only their third appearance at the World Cup (after 1982 and 2010). Their most notable achievement was remaining unbeaten in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup (three draws), but they were still eliminated.

New Zealand qualified for the 2026 World Cup after defeating New Caledonia in the final of the Oceania qualifying round.

Iran

Iran qualified for the 2026 World Cup after losing only one match in the Asian qualifying round. They are the second Asian team to qualify by March 2025.

The team, nicknamed "Team Melli," is ranked 21st in the FIFA rankings – the second highest ranking in Asia (after Japan). This is their 7th appearance at the World Cup. Iran has never advanced beyond the group stage in their previous appearances.

Egypt

Egypt is unbeaten in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the African region (8 wins, 2 draws), ahead of their rivals Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

Egypt is ranked 29th in the FIFA rankings. This is their fourth appearance at the World Cup (previous appearances were in 1934, 1990, and 2018). Egypt has never advanced beyond the group stage of the tournament.

Belgium

The Belgian national team topped Group J of the European qualifying round with 8 unbeaten matches (5 wins, 3 draws against Wales, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein).
