Ensuring safety of irrigation works during storm season

Irrigation works not only help regulate irrigation water sources but also reduce risks caused by natural disasters, especially droughts and floods. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, all levels and functional branches in the province have proactively reviewed and assessed the current status of dike works, identified key weak dikes, developed dike protection plans as well as repairs and remediation, contributing to ensuring the safety of irrigation works, minimizing damage caused by storms and natural disasters.

As one of the important irrigation systems, the locomotive operating the main irrigation canal system of Lien Son supplying water for more than 10 thousand hectares of agricultural land, currently, Lien Son dam managed and exploited by Lien Son Irrigation Company Limited is being repaired with a total investment of more than 89 billion VND. Lien Son dam plays a role in ensuring the safety and quality of the project, contributing to the good implementation of the task of supplying water for agricultural production for the people.

Mr. Ngo Anh Cuong, Head of Water Management and Irrigation Works Department, Lien Son Irrigation Company Limited said: Along with Lien Son dam, the company is managing and exploiting 3 medium-sized reservoirs (Rung Gia, Cham Vang, Da Bac II) and 4 small reservoirs (Gieng Doi, Dong Mo, Bo Co and Bo Nong).

To ensure the safety of irrigation works and minimize damage caused by natural disasters, the company has directed its affiliated units to closely monitor weather forecasts and natural disaster warnings. Organize workers to clear the flow, ensuring the clearness of drainage channels and shafts in the management area. Coordinate with local authorities to remove barriers and posts on drainage channels and shafts. It is expected that in 2025, the company will dredge canals, repair factories, invest in machinery and equipment... with a total cost of nearly 13 billion VND.

Serving irrigation for communes and towns of 3 districts Tam Dao, Tam Duong and Binh Xuyen, currently, Tam Dao Irrigation One Member Co., Ltd. is managing, exploiting and protecting the system of irrigation works including 7 large lakes (Xa Huong, Dong Mo, Vinh Thanh, Lang Ha, Gia Khau, Thanh Lanh, Ban Long), 1 medium lake, 15 small reservoirs with 19 dams and nearly 190 km of irrigation canals, more than 180 km of drainage canals.

Since the beginning of the year, the company has established and strengthened the Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue (DRR) Command Board; developed and implemented the DRR plan with the motto “4 on-site”. The company has completed dredging canals, repaired damaged irrigation works, and identified possible natural disaster situations.

For irrigation enterprises, the company has issued a document assigning enterprises to proactively inspect and clear irrigation works, ensuring water sources for production. Along with that, arrange warehouses, yards, and prepare adequate materials and equipment in terms of quantity, quality, and type.

The province currently has 452 dams, 447 pumping stations, more than 6,000 km of irrigation canals of all kinds and a dike system. Over the years, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has proactively proposed many solutions to maintain and strengthen works to prevent and combat riverbank erosion in areas at risk of complex erosion, seriously affecting dike works, residential areas and important infrastructure. At the same time, it has proactively reviewed and assessed the current status of dike works, identified key weak dikes and developed dike protection plans.

In 2024, the functional sector will consolidate and upgrade more than 4km of dykes from level III and above; complete the construction and upgrade of many important irrigation works and reservoirs.

In recent years, the situation of storms, rains and natural disasters in the whole country has had many unusual developments. In 2025, the weather forecast will have many complicated developments, from March to August 2025, there will be 6 to 13 storms forming near the East Sea. If including the 2025 storm season, the total number of storms in the East Sea can reach from 16 to 19 storms.

To proactively respond to storms and natural disasters, ensure irrigation works, and minimize damage to people and property, all levels and functional sectors have strengthened inspection and assessment of the safety level of the dike system to coordinate with management units to develop plans to ensure the safety of the dike system during the storm season.
