Ensuring the quality of breeding stock when it reaches the people.

Việt NamViệt Nam28/07/2024

In 2024, the Thai Nguyen Agricultural Extension Center was assigned by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to implement two projects supporting breeding cattle for poor and near-poor households in Phu Binh and Dai Tu districts. Before delivering the breeding cattle to the farmers, the Center organized visits for all eligible households to reputable breeding facilities for selection.

Poor people from Tan Khanh commune (Phu Binh district) visit and select breeding cows at the Golden Rice Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative in Yen Dung district, Bac Giang province.

Two projects supporting cattle breeding for poor and near-poor households, implemented by the Thai Nguyen Agricultural Extension Center, are part of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction giai đoạn 2021-2025. Each participating household will receive support in the form of one Sind crossbred cow weighing 200-220kg (100% of the cost of the breeding stock is covered).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Luong, Head of the Planning and Technical Department of the Thai Nguyen Agricultural Extension Center, said: The quality of the subsidized breeding cattle must meet several criteria such as: having Vietnamese origin; having a reddish-brown color and naturally smooth fur; not having deformities, long head, protruding forehead, drooping ears, well-developed dewlap, humped shoulders, long legs, short body; the cattle must be 15-18 months old and have been vaccinated according to regulations.

In addition to focusing on the quality of the breeding stock provided to the people, the Thai Nguyen Agricultural Extension Center also organizes visits for supported households to the breeding stock suppliers so they can choose their own breeding stock. For example, on July 16th, 20 poor and near-poor households from Tan Khanh commune (Phu Binh district) visited and selected breeding stock at the breeding farm of the Golden Rice Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative in Yen Dung district, Bac Giang province.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Vo, Chairman of the Tan Khanh Commune People's Committee, shared: "Currently, there are 98 poor households and 94 near-poor households in the commune. After the province announced its policy to support breeding cows for these households, the commune held a meeting and selected the most disadvantaged families to receive the cows. With the opportunity to see, consult, and choose the cows according to their preferences, the people all felt excited and reassured."

Ms. Duong Thi Thuy, residing in Ngo hamlet, Tan Khanh commune, one of the households receiving subsidized cows, said: "Based on my previous experience in raising cattle, I chose female cows with balanced height and weight, heads that are not too big, broad muzzles, moderately long necks, and wide dewlaps."

Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly, from La Muoi hamlet, Tan Khanh commune, said: "I choose cows with broad rib cages, moderately large bellies, straight backs, tightly closed hooves, and broad hindquarters."

Recently, in the province, there have been several cases where households, after receiving subsidized buffaloes and cows, claimed that the animals were sick, thin, and weak. Therefore, organizing field trips for beneficiary households to reputable breeding stock suppliers by the Thai Nguyen Agricultural Extension Center is essential to help reduce negative feedback after receiving the cattle.

To ensure the project's effective implementation, in addition to organizing visits for people to breeding facilities, the Center also organizes training courses before and after receiving the cows to disseminate knowledge to people about techniques for selecting breeding cows; care and feeding techniques; disease prevention and treatment techniques; and techniques for growing and processing feed, etc.

In addition, the Center's staff have closely monitored the area, coordinating with communes and households participating in the project to direct, supervise, and guide the process of caring for and raising the cattle herd in order to achieve the highest economic efficiency.
