A cold air mass from the Arctic is causing a frigid spell affecting much of the continental United States this weekend, with some northern and northeastern regions experiencing snowstorms in the middle of the year's peak travel season.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there were more than 232,000 flights in the US between November 24 and 28, a record high for Thanksgiving season.

Data from Weather.com shows that as of the morning of November 30, sub-freezing temperatures blanketed the area home to approximately 196 million Americans. For millions living in states along the East Coast Interstate 95 corridor, this was the coldest start to winter in years. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported sub-freezing temperatures in many areas of the northern Great Plains and Midwest, while some areas in North Dakota experienced wind chills as low as -40 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists issued an emergency warning of dangerously cold winds in North Dakota and Alaska on November 29-30, with temperatures capable of causing frostbite in just 10 minutes, according to USA Today . Michigan state police urged drivers to exercise caution due to slippery roads, despite not having heavy snowfall. Authorities in Erie, Pennsylvania, declared a snow emergency on November 29 and urged residents to limit travel as the area was forecast to receive up to 1.2 meters of snow this weekend.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul also declared a state of emergency on November 29th in 11 counties due to this snowstorm. Forecasts indicate that some areas of New York will experience snowfall of up to 1.8 meters by early next week.

This weekend, a cold air mass will continue to move south and east, causing temperatures to drop to near 0 degrees Celsius in Texas and Florida. According to ABC News, more than 13 million people in the southern U.S. are under a cold alert. Approximately 70% of the U.S. is predicted to experience temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
