Baracoa is a city in the easternmost province of Guantánamo in Cuba. Founded in 1511 by the first governor of Cuba, Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, it is the oldest Spanish settlement in Cuba and its first capital, nicknamed Ciudad Primada . It is located on an outpost where Christopher Columbus landed on his first voyage to Cuba. It is believed that the name of the city comes from the indigenous Arauaca language, meaning "presence of the sea".
