Accordingly, as of mid-July 2024, Mexico continued to maintain its position as the leading market within the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans- Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) bloc and the third largest individual market, after China and the United States, in terms of consuming the most pangasius fish from Vietnam.
China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continue to be the largest markets for Vietnamese pangasius. Exports to these markets in July reached US$55 million, a 23% increase compared to the same period last year. In the first seven months of this year, pangasius exports to China and Hong Kong (China) reached US$313 million, a 4% decrease compared to the same period last year, mainly due to declines in February and March 2024.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), despite the geographical distance, Vietnamese pangasius remains popular among consumers in Mexico. Vietnamese pangasius shares many similarities in firmness and flavor with other whitefish species such as cod, sole, haddock, and pollock.
Furthermore, with the advantage of much lower production costs compared to other whitefish varieties, Vietnamese pangasius has quickly become a highly competitive substitute not only for Asian palates but also in many countries around the world .
Pangasius catfish is among the seafood products that benefit from the CPTPP Agreement. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, in the first half of July 2024, pangasius catfish exports to Mexico reached over US$4 million, a 90% increase compared to the same period in 2023. As of July 15, 2024, cumulative pangasius catfish exports to this market reached US$39 million, a 14% increase compared to the same period last year.
In the first half of this year, the Mexican market consumed nearly $300,000 worth of value-added pangasius, a 262% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite this growth, the average export price of Vietnamese pangasius to Mexico in the first half of this year remained below $2.50/kg. However, this is still not the lowest price in the past three years.
In the second half of this year, pangasius exports are expected to continue their growth trajectory as people in this Latin American country prepare for festivals and holidays.
