Arrest of former Chairman of Bai Thom Commune

On June 2nd, the Kien Giang Provincial Police announced that the Provincial Police Investigation Agency, in coordination with the Kien Giang Provincial People's Procuracy, had served a decision to initiate a criminal case, indict the suspect, and execute an arrest warrant against Mr. Nguyen Van Nhuong (59 years old, former Chairman of the People's Committee of Bai Thom Commune, Phu Quoc City) for investigation into the act of negligence causing serious consequences.

At the same time, the authorities initiated legal proceedings and temporarily detained suspect Tran Quoc Anh (37 years old), a land and construction official in Bai Thom commune, to investigate his alleged abuse of power and authority while performing his official duties.

Authorities in Kien Giang province read out the decision to prosecute and temporarily detain suspect Nguyen Van Nhuong.

During searches of the residences and workplaces of the two suspects, police seized numerous items and documents related to the investigation.

According to initial investigations, in 2013, Trần Quốc Anh, taking advantage of his position and authority as a land and construction official in Bãi Thơm commune, committed fraudulent acts in the process of reviewing land ownership, creating documents to legitimize many unused plots of land under state management and land originating from other people in Bãi Thơm commune as land reclaimed and used by Quốc Anh's relatives.

The police in Kien Giang province have executed an arrest warrant and detained suspect Tran Quoc Anh.

Subsequently, Quoc Anh prepared the application for approval and forwarded it to Nguyen Van Nhuong, then Chairman of the People's Committee of Bai Thom commune, for signature to confirm the land's origin so that relevant agencies could appraise and issue land use right certificates for the plots. After obtaining the land use rights, Quoc Anh sold the land to others, illegally profiting billions of dong.

The Investigation Police Department of Kien Giang province is continuing to investigate the act of negligence causing serious consequences committed by suspect Nguyen Van Nhuong and the act of abusing position and authority while performing official duties committed by suspect Tran Quoc Anh.
