While exploring the seafloor off the coast of California with a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of 3,268m in 2019, scientists discovered a new species of snailfish. This species was named the rough snailfish (Careproctus colliculi). Photo: MBARI. From the outside, the bumpy snailfish looks adorable. It looks like a bumpy pink mass with big round eyes. Snail fish are typically characterized by large heads, jelly-like bodies covered in loose skin, and narrow tails. Many species have abdominal discs that help them grip the seafloor or larger animals. When looking at photos of the gnarly snailfish, many people described the creature as "adorable" or "the cutest sea monster" they had ever seen. Photo: MBARI. One person even left a comment comparing the bumpy snail fish to a "real-life Pokémon". Photo: Pokemon DB.
"The deep sea is home to an incredible diversity of organisms and is truly a place of beautiful adaptations," said study leader Mackenzie Gerringer, an associate professor of biology at SUNY Geneseo. "Our discovery is a reminder of how much we still don't know about life on Earth." Photo: MBARI. Readers are invited to watch the video : Discovering many new species in the Mekong River Region.
