Hospital explains the rule of "not setting air conditioner below 27 degrees Celsius" even when it's hot

(Dan Tri) - In response to people's comments that setting the minimum air conditioning temperature to 27 degrees Celsius despite the hot weather is too high, Da Nang C Hospital affirmed that the above regulation is in accordance with recommendations.

Previously, residents said that at Da Nang C Hospital, there was a regulation that the air conditioner must be turned on from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the morning and from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Along with that, there was a regulation that the air conditioner must not be turned on without permission and the temperature must not be set below 27 degrees Celsius.

People believe that this regulation is aimed at saving electricity, but it causes inconvenience and affects the health and psychology of patients and their families in the context of the extremely hot summer weather in the Central region, where before 9:30 a.m. or after 4:30 p.m. the outdoor temperature can reach over 37 degrees Celsius.

In addition, from around 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm, when patients and relatives usually rest, the air conditioner is completely turned off, making the air in the room hot and stuffy, affecting the elderly, children or people with underlying cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

In addition, setting the minimum temperature limit at 27 degrees Celsius is too high, while a crowded room with insufficient ventilation also makes the patient feel uncomfortable.

Regarding this, Da Nang C Hospital said that the unit applies a time frame for using air conditioners to save electricity and ensure the longevity of the equipment. However, in reality, medical staff still flexibly adjust according to weather conditions to ensure comfort for patients.

In addition, all patient rooms are equipped with fans to ensure ventilation and air circulation when the air conditioner is not working.

Da Nang C Hospital also said that the suggested location is the severe illness room of the Oncology Center, with an area of 56.16 square meters, including 10 beds, equipped with 2 air conditioners, each 2HP and 8 ceiling fans.

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, each 2HP air conditioner is recommended for a space of 20-30m2, so with the current patient room area of the Oncology Center, 2 air conditioners are suitable.

Regarding the temperature limit of 27 degrees Celsius, Da Nang C Hospital said that this is the temperature level based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), experts, manufacturers and Vietnam Electricity Corporation.

Accordingly, the ideal room temperature when using air conditioning is recommended to be between 26-28 degrees Celsius, with a difference of no more than 5-8 degrees Celsius compared to the outside temperature to avoid thermal shock. The higher the outside temperature, the higher the air conditioning temperature must be to avoid too high a temperature difference.

The hospital also warned that using air conditioning at low temperatures for long periods of time can lead to many health risks such as stroke, nerve paralysis, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc.

“Based on scientific recommendations, the hospital has issued regulations on the use of air conditioners at temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius or higher and on-off regulations by the hour are appropriate, avoiding danger to patients' health and helping to save electricity,” Da Nang C Hospital affirmed.

Regarding the appointment of medical staff to adjust the air conditioner, Da Nang C Hospital said that this is necessary and convenient to ensure consistency, avoiding arbitrary adjustments based on individual feelings, affecting others.
