Defendant Trinh Van Quyet had his sentence reduced to 14 years in prison.

The trial panel sentenced defendant Trinh Van Quyet to 07 years in prison for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property" (first instance sentence of 18 years in prison); and fined 04 billion VND for the crime of "Stock market manipulation" (first instance sentence of 03 years in prison). Previously, the total sentence of the first instance sentence was 21 years in prison. Thus, defendant Trinh Van Quyet's sentence was reduced by 14 years in prison.

The two younger sisters of the defendant Quyet, who were accomplices in this case, also had their sentences reduced. Defendant Trinh Thi Minh Hue was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison and fined 3.5 billion VND (first instance verdict was 14 years in prison); Trinh Thi Thuy Nga was sentenced to time in detention and fined 3 billion VND (first instance verdict was 8 years).

Some defendants who did not appeal but had new circumstances also had their sentences reduced by the Court of Appeal, to have a uniform sentence compared to other defendants whose sentences had been reduced.

The group of defendants, former officials of the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE), had their sentences reduced, including: Le Hai Tra (former Deputy General Director of HOSE) 4 years (first instance sentence of 5 years in prison for the crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties"); Tran Dac Sinh (former Chairman of the Board of Directors of HOSE) 4 years and 6 months in prison (first instance sentence of 6 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties").

In addition, the Trial Panel does not accept appeals from victims who have filed applications.

The court also announced the cancellation of the asset seizure and the freezing of bank accounts and securities accounts of the defendants in the case.

Defendant Quyet and his two sisters Trinh Thi Minh Hue and Trinh Thi Thuy Nga have paid a total of 2,467 billion VND and paid an excess of more than 46 billion VND to ensure the execution of the judgment.

According to the Court of Appeal, the defendant’s complete settlement of civil liability for compensation in the case clearly demonstrates his responsibility, remorse, and positive attitude in remedying the consequences. From there, there is a basis to accept the appeal of defendant Trinh Van Quyet to impose a sufficiently deterrent and strict sentence, also demonstrating the leniency of the law.
