What should I eat if I have dry joints?

VnExpressVnExpress12/06/2023

Besides taking medicine, a suitable diet including lots of green vegetables, fruits, fish... is an important part in treating dry joints.

Although not life-threatening, dry joints seriously reduce the patient's quality of life by causing prolonged joint pain and stiffness, limiting mobility, increasing the risk of muscle atrophy and joint deformities... Dry joints often occur in the elderly, people with little or excessive exercise, overweight people, people with joint diseases such as arthritis, dislocation...

MSc. Dr. Tran Thi Hoai Thanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Musculoskeletal, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, said that the main components of synovial fluid are water, collagen, hyaluronic acid and protase. To be able to continuously produce these components, the body needs to be fully supplied with calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, unsaturated fatty acids... Therefore, to control dry joints, in addition to the doctor's instructions in treatment, patients also need to build a scientific nutritional regimen, increasing foods that are good for bones and joints.

Marine fish

People with dry joints should eat fish at least twice a week. Recommended fish include anchovies, mackerel, salmon, herring...

The rich content of omega-3 fatty acids in marine fish not only helps reduce inflammation and protect the skeletal system, but also has the effect of creating moisture, stimulating the secretion of synovial fluid in the joints and keeping the cartilage working smoothly. Thereby preventing and supporting the treatment of dry joints effectively.

Cereal

To improve dry joints and associated symptoms, patients should eat more grains and nuts such as brown rice, wheat, oats, sesame, etc.

This food group is a source of calcium, vitamins, protein, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids... which help nourish the skeletal system, stimulate joint fluid secretion and increase the ability to recover from damage. Cereals also contain antioxidants, which help slow down the aging process of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. In addition, a diet rich in cereals helps control weight, reduces stress on joints, and is beneficial for the regulation of synovial fluid.

Beans

Beans are a rich source of protein, fiber, and minerals. In particular, this food group also provides anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, which effectively helps control dry joints. Beans suitable for people with dry joints include: black beans, lentils, green beans, pinto beans (chickpeas) and soybeans.

Milk and dairy products

The rich content of vitamin D and calcium in this food group helps improve bone and joint quality and heal injuries. At the same time, the hydrolyzed collagen in milk also participates in the process of cartilage regeneration, helping joints become more flexible. When joints are healthy, the function of creating joint lubricant will take place more smoothly. People with dry joints should drink 200 - 400ml of milk or eat 2 boxes of yogurt every day.

Green vegetables and fruits

Vitamins, calcium, collagen, antioxidants... in green vegetables and fruits help prevent degenerative development, increase joint fluid secretion, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and promote healing of bone and joint damage.

Some fruits and vegetables suitable for people with dry joints are grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, guava, papaya, cabbage, broccoli...

Dr. Hoai Thanh shared that, in addition to the foods that should be increased, people with dry joints also need to limit food groups that can make the disease worse such as: processed foods, because the high salt content in them will promote the development of arthritis, reducing joint fluid secretion. Avoid foods containing a lot of sugar, alcohol and alcoholic beverages... These ingredients reduce the supply of oxygen to the joints, accelerate bone destruction, hinder the bone regeneration process, causing dry joints, increasing pain and swelling of the joints.
