What is a priority road?

A priority road is a road where vehicles entering the intersection are given priority by other vehicles coming from different directions, and these sections of road are usually marked with priority road signs to make it clear to road users.

According to Article 5 of QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT issued with Circular 54/2019/TT-BGTVT, effective from July 1, 2020, the order of priority roads, but without the use of priority road signs, includes: Expressways - National Highways - Urban Roads - Provincial Roads - District Roads - Commune Roads - Specialized Roads.

When two roads are of the same order and intersect at the same level, the priority is determined as follows: The road designated by the competent authority will be the priority road; the road with a higher technical rating will be the priority road; when roads have different traffic volumes, the road with a higher average daily and nightly traffic volume will be the priority road.

In order of priority, but without using priority road signs, the highway is the number one priority road.

Priority road sign W.207

W.207 (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, k, l) is a priority road sign meaning "Intersection with non-priority road" and is placed before intersections outside of urban areas. Urban areas may use appropriate signs depending on actual conditions.

Vehicles on roads marked with this priority sign have priority when crossing intersections. However, they must yield to vehicles with priority rights as stipulated by regulations.

Road sign W.208 (No Priority Road)

W.208 is a non-priority road sign indicating an intersection with a priority road. When you encounter the W.208 non-priority road sign, it means you are traveling on a non-priority road. The purpose of the sign is to warn you that you are approaching an intersection with a priority road.

When driving on a road with a W.208 sign, you must yield to vehicles traveling on the other road. Below the W.208 non-priority road sign is the S.506b sign indicating "direction of priority road" when the intersection with a priority road changes direction or turns. The remaining priority road section will have a sign indicating an intersection with a priority road, signaling to drivers of vehicles participating in traffic.

If a vehicle encounters a W.208 non-priority road sign in a densely populated area, the sign is placed at the intersection with a priority road. Outside of densely populated areas, depending on the distance from the sign, the S.502 sign may be placed to indicate the "distance to the sign."
