CBS News on May 26 quoted the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as saying that the new COVID-19 variant named NB.1.8.1 has appeared at many international airports, especially in the states of California, Washington, Virginia and New York.
The samples collected came from international passengers from many countries such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and especially China - which is believed to be the epicenter of the new outbreak.
According to Professor Subhash Verma, a microbiologist and immunologist at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, this variant has similar symptoms to previous strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with common signs including: cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue...
"We have not seen any indication that NB.1.8.1 causes more severe disease than previous variants, but it is more transmissible," Verma said.
It is known that NB.1.8.1 is currently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant under monitoring (Variant Under Monitoring - VUM).
Although this variant is highly transmissible, the Trump administration is still planning to limit booster vaccinations to certain groups such as the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions, according to CBS News.
In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also requires vaccine manufacturers to conduct new clinical trials if they want to bring their products to market.
However, many experts warn: "This decision could reduce vaccination rates and cause confusion in the community", because requiring new clinical trials will prolong vaccine access time, while making people worry about costs and insurance benefits.
