Russian media channels published photos and videos recording the scene of the S-400 complex crashing on the side of a highway in Tula province on April 20.
The 33-year-old soldier who was driving the vehicle was reportedly found to have alcohol on his breath. Baza, a news site that regularly reports on security issues in Russia, said the vehicle was lagging behind a convoy of eight vehicles on the highway before it crashed and overturned.
The truck carrying the missile crashed, but fortunately none of the missiles were detonated, Baza said. The serviceman operating the S-400 complex could be prosecuted under an article of the Russian Criminal Code for negligent damage to military property.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the images posted online.
The S-400 is a Russian-designed mobile surface-to-air missile system capable of destroying aircraft, UAVs and cruise missiles, and is also capable of defending against ballistic missiles in the terminal phase. Russia began developing the S-400 in 1993. The complex mainly uses 48N6 missiles capable of attacking aerial targets at ranges of up to 250km. The S-400 can intercept ballistic missiles within a radius of 60km.
