Ministry of Education and Training discusses ways to innovate national excellent student exams

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's Communications Center, at the conference reporting on the work of selecting excellent students at the national level to compete in regional and international Olympic competitions for the period 2013 - 2023, Director of the Department of Quality Management Huynh Van Chuong said, From 2013 to present, the work of selecting excellent students at the national level, selecting and training teams for regional and international Olympic competitions has been stable and effective ; overcoming some difficulties and shortcomings arising in the process of organizing the selection of excellent students at the national level and participating in international Olympic competitions in the new context .

Director of the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training, reports on the organization of the national gifted student selection exam over the past 10 years.

The results of the regional and international Olympic competitions of Vietnamese gifted student delegations have always improved in both quantity and quality, with each year being higher than the previous year. Vietnamese student delegations continue to be in the top 10 countries with the highest results, with many students achieving the highest scores. In particular, the results of the national gifted student selection exams and the annual regional and international Olympic competitions have had a strong impact on the emulation movement of good teaching and good learning in high schools.

Some shortcomings have also been recognized. In particular, the organization of experimental and practical exams in physics, chemistry and biology in the national gifted student selection exam is still difficult. The mobilization of experts to participate in the work of creating questions and grading exams is still difficult. There is no mechanism to create a connection between professional responsibilities of scientific experts, lecturers, researchers of academies, research institutes, universities and colleges.

Need to record the later achievements of excellent students

At the conference, Mr. Ho Dac Phuong, lecturer of the Faculty of Information Technology, University of Technology - Vietnam National University , Hanoi (UET), shared statistical results from about 3,000 students of this faculty in 5 years. Accordingly, the group of students from direct admission (national excellent students), direct admission (provincial excellent students) had better academic results than the group of students admitted through other admission methods such as high school graduation exam results, capacity assessment, IELTS/SAT.

From this reality, Mr. Phuong suggested that the Ministry of Education and Training should require universities to have clear statistics on the results and later achievements of students who were once excellent students...

Chairing the conference, Mr. Nguyen Huu Do, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, assessed that the national gifted student selection competition in recent times has basically had positive changes, from adjusting regulations, improving the quality of gifted students at all levels to positively impacting the innovation of teaching methods towards promoting creativity, proactiveness, meeting the requirements of the program and the requirements of national and international gifted student competitions.

In order for the exam to select gifted students to achieve the highest quality in the coming time, Mr. Do suggested that departments and units continue to implement Project 959 on developing the specialized high school system in the direction of improving the quality of the specialized school system, paying attention to enrollment, financial mechanisms, teacher policies, policies to encourage gifted students, improving facilities, equipment, and practice conditions...

Deputy Minister Do also requested that we continue to focus on innovating the training of gifted students. Innovating the selection of gifted students right from the school and provincial levels, ensuring that the best gifted students are selected to participate in the national gifted student exam. At the same time, innovating the regulations on gifted student exams to overcome shortcomings, ensuring a serious and quality exam. In particular, increasing the participation of highereducation institutions in the national gifted student exam.
