Speaking to The Wall Street Journal , one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence, Yoshua Bengio, delivered the message that AI machines are becoming more dangerous than ever.
“It would be dangerous if we created machines that are much smarter than humans and have their own self-protection goals. It would be like creating a competitor to humanity and smarter than us,” Mr. Bengio said.
Bengio, a Canadian research scientist whose early work on deep learning and neural networks laid the foundation for the modern AI boom, is considered one of the "fathers of AI" along with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun.
Like Hinton, Bengio has warned of the potential harms of AI and called for collective action to mitigate the risks.
The University of Montreal professor believes that AI products can now develop the ability to deceive users to pursue their own goals, like sentient supercomputer villains in science fiction movies.
To counter this, Mr. Bengio emphasized the need for “independent third parties” to review the internal safety mechanisms of AI companies. In addition, this “Godfather” of AI also requires companies to provide evidence that “the AI systems they are deploying or using are trustworthy.”
If safety measures are not taken, Bengio predicts major AI risks are inevitable in the next 10-15 years, with a worst-case scenario of just three years before a potential disaster occurs.
