According to data from film market analysis company Comscore, the action film "Fast X" by Universal Pictures dominated the North American box office in its first week of release, with an estimated opening revenue of 67.5 million USD.
The 10th film in the hit series "Fast & Furious" also won the No. 1 spot at the box office in 84 countries outside North America with a revenue of 251.4 million USD, thereby becoming the film with the biggest opening revenue in the international market since the beginning of the year.
Globally, the film has now grossed $318.9 million, with about $78 million coming from mainland China.
However, "Fast X" is only the second highest-grossing blockbuster of the year, behind the animated film "Super Mario Bros" ($377 million).
"Fast X" is the third best opening in the "Fast & Furious" series, behind "The Fate of the Furious" and "Furious 7."
The film begins with events taking place in 2011, when the main character Dominic (played by Vin Diesel) and his teammates rob the property of boss Hernan Reyes.
After the clash, Hernan Reyes was killed, but his son Dante Reyes (played by Jason Momoa) remembered the grudge and planned to take revenge on Dominic and his family.
Years later, Dante - described as "demon-like" - reappears with several allies and a sinister plot to harm Dominic's 8-year-old son...
"Fast X" is directed by French filmmaker Louis Leterrier. In addition to Vin Diesel and Jason Momoa, the film also features Michelle Rodriguez, Scott Eastwood, Michael Rooker and Cardi B.
With an investment of 340 million USD - not including marketing costs, this work is considered a "feast of special effects, speed with overwhelming action scenes," but the script is criticized.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a positive score of 54% based on 223 reviews from critics.
The film also earned a "B+" grade on an A+ to F scale in audience surveys conducted by market research firm CinemaScore.
In the list of the most popular movies in North America last weekend, the superhero movie "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3" co-produced by Disney and Marvel Studios fell to second place with more than 31.9 million USD in its third week of release.
The film has grossed nearly $266.5 million in North America, bringing its global total to more than $659.1 million as of May 21.
Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures' animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" earned an additional $9.8 million in its seventh week, bringing its global total to $1.2 billion, including $549.2 million in North America.
Ranking 4th and 5th respectively in the list of best-selling films in North America last week were "Book Club: The Next Chapter" ($3 million) and "Evil Dead Rise" ($2.4 million).
