Tevez became incredibly wealthy after just 7 months in China. |
In 2016, Tevez was one of many top world stars to move to the Chinese Super League, a time when Chinese football was spending heavily to attract famous players. In December of the same year, the Argentine striker signed with Shanghai Shenhua in a deal that shocked the transfer market.
According to numerous sources at the time, Tevez was earning a salary of around £615,000 per week, making him one of the highest-paid players in the world. With this income, the Argentinian striker could have earned around £32 million in a year playing in China.
Some sources even claimed his income could reach £650,000 per week, although Tevez himself later stated that the figure was exaggerated.

Tevez was once a "blockbuster" signing in the Chinese league. |
However, in contrast to his exorbitant salary, Tevez's performance at Shanghai Shenhua was disappointing. Throughout his time with the Shanghai club, he only scored 4 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.
Tevez's unconvincing form led to much criticism from the media and fans. At the time, coach Wu Jingui even publicly commented that the striker was overweight and not in good enough shape to play.
Furthermore, Tevez caused controversy when he was spotted on vacation with his family at an amusement park while the team was playing, supposedly due to an "injury." Some sources in England also reported that the Argentinian striker wasn't really familiar with the local cuisine and had to find his own way to eat.
After an unsuccessful spell in China, Tevez left Shanghai Shenhua and returned to his boyhood club Boca Juniors in January 2018. Upon his return to Argentina, he jokingly shared that his time in China was like "a long vacation" before returning to Boca.
Tevez continued to play for a few more years before officially retiring in 2022. The peak of his career came while playing in the Premier League for Manchester United and Manchester City.
