And the horrific moment of pain for star player Musiala was perhaps the lowest point for the emotions of German fans.
These defeats are understandable, and also disheartening.
For decades, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have embodied the quintessential image of German football. Bayern Munich is a powerful force, dominating titles and boasting some of the brightest stars in German football. Dortmund, on the other hand, represents a fiery spirit, with a fan base considered the largest in the world (Dortmund has held the record for highest stadium attendance for many consecutive seasons), even though they haven't achieved the same level of success as their rivals.
When Bayern Munich and Dortmund reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, the Bundesliga became the dominant league. But that joy was short-lived, as both teams were quickly eliminated.
Dortmund lost to Real Madrid again. This was their third defeat against the Spanish giants in just over a year. Dortmund's inferiority to Real Madrid is undeniable, but their continuous defeats without any surprises are truly disheartening. For comparison, fans can see that even the "king of second place" in the Premier League, Arsenal, or struggling teams like AC Milan, have sometimes managed to beat Real Madrid.
Those defeats are a sad sign for Dortmund – a team that once struck fear into Real Madrid when they were under manager Jurgen Klopp. Since Klopp left, Dortmund has significantly lost its tenacious spirit.
Dortmund's loss to Real Madrid is understandable, and Bayern Munich's loss to PSG at this point is equally understandable. PSG is considered the strongest team in the world, and indeed they gave Bayern Munich virtually no chance to retaliate. But the fact that the "Bavarian giants" were completely helpless despite playing with a man advantage for the last 15 minutes of the match is disheartening for fans. Even more disappointing is that Bayern Munich had previously dominated PSG with 5 wins in their last 6 encounters over the past 5 years.

Too many problems
Bayern Munich's weak resistance exposed the capabilities of coach Vincent Kompany, who until now has left the "Bavarian" fans bewildered, wondering why he was appointed by the club's management.
The former renowned Belgian center-back had only a few years of experience with average European teams (Anderlecht, Burnley) before his unexpected appointment to the hot seat at Allianz Arena. Kompany had a brilliant playing career, but with Manchester City and the Belgian national team, with no connection whatsoever to Germany.
Kompany's appointment is as puzzling as Bayern Munich's treatment of a series of big-name coaches over the past 10 years. They were too hasty with Carlo Ancelotti – a brilliant strategist who was sacked after only two months in charge – but too patient with Niko Kovac, who also lacked experience.
Hansi Flick revived Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021, but the club's management was too careless, failing to retain him when the former star was offered a contract by the German Football Federation. As a result, they fell into a new cycle, hastily appointing and then hastily dismissing big names like Nagelsmann and Tuchel... In just about eight years, the "Bavarian giants" lost four excellent coaches, leaving fans extremely disappointed. Ultimately, they chose a coach with virtually no experience.
And the consequence is what has happened in the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup over the past few months. Bayern Munich has consistently suffered defeats when facing tough opponents like Inter Milan or PSG. This is a reflection of German football. From a team that was always fiery, they have become surprisingly easy to decipher in big matches.
The coaching staff's capabilities, top-level issues, and the management system are the main reasons, and we cannot ignore another aspect – human resources. Musiala is a rare star who has reached world-class level in German football, and at Bayern Munich at the moment. His development has stalled due to three relatively serious injuries in the past year. And now, the horrifying image of a broken bone means the 22-year-old midfielder will certainly be sidelined until the end of 2025.
Bayern Munich's disappointing failures in the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup reflect a growing disillusionment with German football.
