"Shadow Puppet" tells the story of the fight to be yourself.
“Puppetry” was staged by Meritorious Artist Ta Tuan Minh from the script by author Vu Hoang Hoa, revolving around the battle for “Being yourself”. The play begins when Kien returns home after receiving news of his father’s sudden death. No one in the family gives Kien an explanation for his father’s death. Kien blames the adults for hiding and deceiving him. Locked away in his father’s studio, Kien goes back to the past through puppets, searching for the cause of his father’s mysterious death. The secrets hidden in the hearts of each relative gradually reveal themselves to Kien, from his father, mother, younger sister to close relatives…
“Shadow” leaves the audience with questions: Can each person live true to themselves? Are their choices governed by a web of responsibilities? Can choosing according to one’s own will bring happiness?
As the name suggests, director Ta Tuan Minh, in collaboration with Meritorious Artist Le Chi Kien (puppet director), uses puppetry to lead the audience into the hidden depths of each person, peeling off and exposing each layer from the pitch black screen until everything appears transparent. Many different forms of puppetry such as shadow puppetry, mask puppetry, puppetry with people... are skillfully performed on stage, combining to create beautiful, impressive performances, depicting stories that are difficult to express in words or physical form...
In particular, this is a play that is deeply psychological, requiring the actors to have good acting skills, from the eyes, facial expressions to body movements. Fortunately, director Ta Tuan Minh has possessed the current excellent cast of the Vietnam Drama Theater for the play. They transformed into the characters, expressed psychological depth and made the audience admire their acting, such as Khuat Quynh Hoa, The Nguyen... In particular, the play also invited veteran actors who used to work at the Vietnam Drama Theater, now retired, to participate such as People's Artist Lan Huong, People's Artist Viet Thang...
In addition, the stage design by artist Ha Nguyen Long and the music were selected and edited appropriately, contributing to bringing a contemporary dramatic art experience, breaking all the rules of traditional drama.
The play “Shadow Puppet” will be performed on November 20, 21 and 23 at the Vietnam Drama Theater (No. 1 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi ).
