According to the Financial Times, on August 24, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the BRICS group (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) had decided to invite six countries – Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – to join the bloc.

The decision was made at the BRICS summit held from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to the latest statement from the South African President, these countries will be admitted as BRICS members from January 1, 2024.
Expanding BRICS is a key focus area at this summit. Currently, more than 20 countries have registered as full members of BRICS. Calls for expansion have received support from leaders within the bloc. The South African president stated that this represents a group of nations desiring a more balanced world order.
The BRICS group has a combined population accounting for 40% of the world's population and a combined GDP representing 25% of global GDP. South African officials stated that more than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the bloc, with 22 countries having submitted formal offers. Also at this summit, BRICS leaders agreed to a resolution to study the development of a new payment currency.
