(CLO) The Kazan Declaration at the BRICS 2024 Summit taking place in Kazan, Russia is titled "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security". The 43-page document includes 134 articles.
BRICS member states strongly oppose and condemn the implementation of politically motivated unilateral sanctions that undermine the development of other countries, according to the Kazan Declaration adopted at the 16th BRICS Summit on Wednesday.

“We condemn attempts to impose development on politically motivated discriminatory practices, including but not limited to unilateral coercive measures inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and practices aimed at undermining the diversity of international development assistance providers,” the document said.
"We are deeply concerned about the corrosive impact of unlawful unilateral coercive measures, including illegal sanctions, on the global economy , international trade and the achievement of the sustainable development goals," the statement said.
“We reaffirm our support for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, aimed at making the United Nations more democratic, representative, effective and efficient,” the document said.
In addition to essential reforms, BRICS members called on the United Nations to play a key role in global governance of artificial intelligence.
The statement also focused on global conflicts including those in the Middle East and Ukraine.
"We remain concerned about the continued rise in violence and armed conflicts in many parts of the world," the statement said. BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to resolving disputes peacefully through diplomacy.
The leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing tense situation in the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of all hostilities.
The leaders noted the importance of establishing a sovereign and independent State of Palestine within the internationally recognized borders of June 1967 and expressed support for Palestine's full membership in the United Nations.
Member states also reiterated their national positions on the Ukraine crisis and "took note with appreciation of the relevant proposals" to resolve the conflict peacefully through diplomacy.
Also at the BRICS Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on the bloc's countries to lead "urgent" reforms to the international financial architecture.

"Under current circumstances, the urgency of reforming the international financial architecture is becoming more prominent," Xi said, according to state news agency Xinhua.
“BRICS countries should play a leading role, strengthen financial cooperation, promote financial infrastructure connectivity, maintain high-level financial security, expand and strengthen the New Development Bank, and promote the international financial system to better reflect changes in the world economic landscape,” Xi said.
The meeting in the Russian city of Kazan was the first since BRICS added five new members earlier this year, and Xi confirmed the bloc would soon invite more "partner countries" to join.
The 16th BRICS Summit took place in Kazan from October 22-24. The BRICS group was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) became full members.
