Bruno Fernandes' disappointed expression after MU's goals. |
In this confrontation, Bruno Fernandes was benched by coach Ruben Amorim, making way for Kobbie Mainoo. In the first half, Grimsby Town surprisingly took a 2-0 lead.
After Charles Vernam opened the scoring for Grimsby, cameras captured the moment Bruno clasped his hands in frustration at the defensive error. The moment quickly went viral on social media.
Matters got worse when Tyrell Warren scored Grimsby's second, capitalising on a mistake by goalkeeper Andre Onana.
At the beginning of the second half, coach Amorim was forced to send Bruno on to replace young defender Fredricson, helping the "Red Devils" play better and score 2 goals thanks to Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire. However, MU lost 11-12 on penalties and was eliminated in the second round of the League Cup.
Bruno alone cannot save MU. |
Commenting on Sky Sports , commentator Alan Smith criticized: "It's unbelievable that Grimsby had so many gaps. MU is chaotic and disorganized. This is a bad performance for both MU and Onana, there is no sign that they can improve."
Another former MU player, Phil Jones, also summed up the situation after the first half: "This was a very difficult half for MU. The goalkeeper (Onana) did not show anything outstanding. They had difficulty creating attacks, while Grimsby were excellent."
MU will return to the Premier League to face Burnley in round 3 on August 30.
