BSR launches and sells new batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

On June 4, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) successfully launched and sold the first commercial batch of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This is an important milestone, marking a new step forward for BSR in its journey of researching and developing green, sustainable energy products.

Attending the event were representatives of the Department of Industry and Trade, Quang Ngai Provincial Police, and representatives of Vietnam Aviation Fuel Company Limited (Skypec). On the BSR side, there were Mr. Bui Ngoc Duong - Chairman of the Board of Directors; Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang - General Director, along with members of the Board of Directors, Board of General Directors, Board of Supervisors, Factory Board of Directors, leaders of functional departments and employees participating in the research and production of SAF products.

The first batch of SAF products was produced from imported Neat SAF raw materials mixed with BSR's Jet A-1 fuel, with a capacity of 20-22m³. The first commercial partner to receive the product was Vietnam Aviation Fuel Company Limited (Skypec).

Mr. Hoang Thanh Son - Head of BSR Research and Development Department said: In preparation for the sale, over the past months, BSR has completed the technical plan for SAF blending, improved the infrastructure system at the tank truck loading station and the storage tank area, and is ready to blend small batches (20-100 m³) and large batches (2,000-10 thousand m³), serving sales by road and sea. BSR has also proactively implemented procedures related to product standards, sustainable quality and registered with management agencies according to domestic and international market requirements.

On March 31, 2025, BSR was granted two important international certifications, ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU. At the same time, the company also completed all technical documents, internal procedures and basic standards TCCS 23:2024-BSR. The 35% SAF batch (22 m³) from Europe was successfully imported, contained in Isotank and brought to the factory on May 31, ready for blending and production. BSR has worked closely with airlines and logistics units such as Skypec to establish a pilot SAF supply process, from transportation, filling to quality control at the delivery point.

“This event marks the formation of the first closed SAF supply chain in Vietnam - from raw material import, blending, quality control to supply to aviation fuel companies and distribution for domestic and international flights. According to the plan, BSR will deploy the production of larger-scale SAF batches, moving towards commercialization from the fourth quarter of 2025,” Mr. Hoang Thanh Son emphasized.

Speaking at the ceremony, BSR General Director Nguyen Viet Thang emphasized that, in the face of the global energy transition trend and Vietnam's commitment to reduce carbon emissions, BSR has built a roadmap for research, development and efforts to produce this new product line based on available infrastructure conditions. SAF products are blended from sustainable components (SBC/Neat SAF) and Jet A-1, developed on the basis of Jet A-1 standards, supplemented with ASTM D-7566 criteria, ensuring quality for aviation turbine engines. The product is in the list of key products of Petrovietnam .

The sale of the first batch of SAF 5% confirms that BSR's production, blending, and quality management system is qualified to supply SAF, and at the same time demonstrates the complete integration of the chain between manufacturers, blending, and distribution units with units that have all obtained ISCC certification. This is an important premise for building and developing sustainable aviation fuel in line with the global energy transition trend and Vietnam's carbon emission commitment.

“Today’s event affirms Petrovietnam’s determination to implement Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science , technology, innovation and national digital transformation. We are proud to be one of the pioneers in commercializing SAF, aiming to provide clean energy solutions for domestic and international airlines,” Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang emphasized.

On the journey of researching and commercializing SAF, BSR is also actively expanding international cooperation. In March 2025, in the US, BSR signed a pre-feasibility study consulting contract with Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), one of the world's leading enterprises in the field of energy technology and engineering consulting.

Also in March 2025, BSR was officially granted ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certifications by SGS Germany GmbH (Federal Republic of Germany). These are the two most prestigious global certifications for SAF, with the scope of certification including blending, production, storage and trading of SAF products. The certification is valid from March 31, 2025 to March 30, 2026.

Possessing ISCC certification qualifies BSR to export SAF products to international markets, especially the EU market, which has the most stringent regulations on emissions and renewable energy. The certification is also a testament to BSR's efforts to meet green, sustainable and environmentally responsible production standards, an advantage for the company to expand cooperation and sign commercial contracts with partners with high sustainability requirements.

At the ceremony, delegates witnessed the Dung Quat Oil Refinery representative handing over SAF products to Skypec Company. This is also BSR's commitment to the energy transition roadmap and the process of building a green, sustainable oil refinery.

SAF - environmentally friendly aviation fuel

SAF is a fuel produced from renewable or biomass-derived materials, helping to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions compared to traditional aviation fuels. Globally, SAF is considered the most feasible and effective solution to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry - the most difficult sector to decarbonize today. Developing SAF is part of BSR's long-term strategy of researching and commercializing new energy products, in addition to projects such as biofuel, green fuel and hydrogen. Currently, BSR is producing more than 10 petroleum products of all kinds, the main of which are A95 gasoline, DO oil, PP plastic pellets, etc. The addition of SAF to the product portfolio affirms BSR's pioneering role in the energy transition trend and sustainable development of Vietnam's petrochemical industry.
