The Cycling Federation of Thailand provided Vietnam with various pieces of equipment.
Regarding the incident where the Vietnamese road cycling team's bicycles were destroyed by fire, the latest update indicates that the Cycling Association of Thailand (TCA) has purchased 18 new helmets, 18 pairs of competition shoes, and 18 pairs of pedals for the Vietnamese athletes. In addition, the TCA has prepared 27 bicycles for the Vietnamese team to choose from and is currently transporting them from Bangkok to the competition venue (Pichit province, approximately 380 km from Bangkok).
It is known that the Vietnamese cycling team will compete in individual time trial events from February 7th to 11th, followed by road race events. Currently, the Vietnam Cycling Federation is preparing road bikes for the athletes and will bring them from Vietnam to Thailand on February 10th.
How much were the Vietnamese athletes' bicycles destroyed in the fire, and who suffered the most significant losses?
The Thai Football Association has sent 27 vehicles to support the Vietnamese team.
The car was urgently transported back to Bangkok.
The car was completely burned.
The specialized bicycles used by athletes are very valuable.
However, the organizers lending Vietnamese athletes bikes for the competition is merely a stopgap solution. According to the coaches, given the nature of cycling, each athlete needs their own specialized bike suited to their height and weight. Competing with borrowed bikes cannot guarantee optimal performance, especially since the Vietnamese road cycling team is hoping to achieve high results in many senior and junior events at this year's Asian Road Cycling Championships.
The damage was enormous.
As Thanh Nien newspaper previously reported, information from the Vietnamese cycling team indicates that after arriving at Bangkok airport, the Vietnamese delegation boarded a bus provided by the organizers to travel to the competition venue. Their equipment, including bikes, spare tires, shoes, and helmets, was transported by truck by the organizers. The reason why the truck caught fire remains a big question mark. However, the number of bikes and equipment damaged for the Vietnamese cycling team is quite significant. Some athletes competing in two events needed to bring two specialized bikes for the competition.
Among the approximately 30 bicycles belonging to the Vietnamese national cycling team that were destroyed in Thailand, cyclist Nguyen Tuan Vu suffered the most significant losses. He brought two racing bicycles to the Asian Championships: one specialized Cervelo bike for individual time trial events, valued at over 400 million VND (with Scope wheels alone costing 107 million VND), and another Giant bike for road racing, also worth around 400 million VND. These two bikes were invested in by Ho Chi Minh City for their key athlete, Nguyen Tuan Vu, and he used them for competitions when he joined the national team.
Equally significant was the loss suffered by young talent Pham Le Xuan Loc (Army), who brought two Cervelo bicycles to Thailand, worth over 600 million VND. The Loc Troi An Giang Group invested in eight bicycles for Nguyen Thi That, Thu Mai, and others – all members of the Vietnamese national cycling team. According to Mr. Tran Hai Trieu, General Secretary of the An Giang Cycling and Motorcycling Federation, the value of these eight bicycles must be over 2 billion VND. The remaining bicycles of the Vietnamese athletes were also worth around 150 million VND each. In total, the damage from the bicycle fire affecting the Vietnamese national cycling team is substantial.
Vietnamese national team's bicycle fire: Cause of fire unknown, organizers will provide compensation.
"The coaching staff is compiling a detailed list of all equipment on the burned bicycles to send to the organizers for compensation. This is the responsibility of the organizers because they are in charge of all transportation arrangements when we arrive in Thailand," said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, head of the Vietnamese cycling team participating in the Asian Road Cycling Championships.
According to our findings, all of the Vietnamese national team's racing bicycles were not insured and only covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Therefore, when incidents like the recent fire occur, they will not be compensated. Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh, Head of the High-Performance Sports Department (Department of Sports and Physical Education), stated that the organizing committee and the Asian Cycling Federation will meet and discuss methods of compensation for the Vietnamese cycling team.
Regarding the racing cars and equipment, according to the regulations of the organizing committee, transportation and storage are handled by the organizing committee, so the organizing committee will compensate for any incidents or damages (estimated at billions of VND).
