Sora, the AI-powered video creator from technology company OpenAI, is now officially available to Android users in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and several other markets.
Originally launched as an iOS app in September 2025, Sora quickly rose to the top of the App Store's most downloaded apps charts, reaching over 1 million downloads in just one week.
With its appearance on the Google Play Store, Sora is expected to attract a larger user base, leading to a surge in downloads.
The Android version of Sora retains all the features of the iOS version, including the Cameos feature, which allows users to create self-recorded videos of themselves performing various activities using their own images.
Videos can be shared in a section similar to the short-video sharing platform TikTok, allowing users to discover and interact with content from others.
This appears to be a strategic move by OpenAI to strengthen its position in the fiercely competitive short-form video sharing sector.
OpenAI aims to compete with major rivals such as Meta, which recently launched its own AI video data feed called Vibes, as well as existing platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
However, the app has faced criticism for its handling of deepfake technology – using AI to create false images, videos, and audio to mimic the voices and faces of others.
Following its initial launch, users began uploading videos that were disrespectful to historical figures, including Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
Therefore, Sora paused creating content depicting Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. last month and increased its protective measures.
Additionally, OpenAI is embroiled in a legal dispute with the popular video producer Cameo regarding the name "Cameo"—a key feature of Sora.
In the future, OpenAI plans to add more features to Sora.
These features include guest appearances, allowing users to create AI-generated videos featuring their pets and inanimate objects.
Basic video editing tools are also being developed, including the ability to combine multiple clips.
Sora also plans to help users customize their social media feeds, focusing on content from select individuals rather than a large audience.
