On the online community theqoo, a post titled: “MEOW of MEOVV gets 1 star rating from IZM” attracted 66,000 views and more than 400 comments when it was posted on the evening of September 17.
The post shares the reviews of music critic site IZM on the song "MEOW" by Kpop girl group MEOVV (including Narin, Gawon, Sooin, Anna, Ella), which was just released on September 6.
IZM commented not very positively on MEOVV's debut product: "In a total duration of less than 3 minutes, the cat's meowing took up more than 1 minute, without any purpose or meaning.
This repetitive sound is added forcefully not only in the intro and outro, but also in the chorus and rap, which quickly becomes tiring.
More importantly, it overpowered the members' voices.”
IZM also believes that this is a bad product compared to the position of the company (The Black Label) headed by producer Teddy.
“Although it seems like Teddy didn't participate in composing the song, the quality is extremely bad for a debut song by a girl group released by his label.
The combination of the bass drum and the kick drum is very sketchy, when combined with the identical layout of both lines, it gradually becomes bland. The remaining 30 seconds to show off the group's choreography further reduces the slightest impression.
Monotonous rhythms, annoying lyrics, boring repetition, and one-sided development are all missteps.
The song is stuck between wanting to express an image and convey a message, both goals cannot be completed, leaving only an ambiguous form,” IZM wrote.
The site added, “The highlight of the song may be Gawon’s voice,” however, “the song is too weak to bring out the strengths of each member.”
“Why is a fast-paced song that will soon be forgotten prioritized over a good song that you have to listen to over and over again?”, IZM questioned the choice of MEOVV's debut song.
With negative reviews, IZM only gave "MEOW" 1/5 stars.
Under the post on theqoo, Korean audiences gave different reactions.
Many comments agreed with IZM's assessment, saying that "MEOW" is a boring, outdated song and not worthy of what Teddy has shown.
However, some people said that at first they didn't like this song, but the more they listened to it, the more attractive it became.
“MEOW" is currently still in the Top 100 of most major Korean music charts such as Melon, Bugs, Genie, Flo.
As of 1 p.m. on September 18 (Korean time), the song is ranked 92nd on Melon Top 100 and the MV "MEOW" has reached 17.39 million views on YouTube.
