Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ca Mau province answered an interview with reporters ofthe Education and Times Newspaper about the sector's operations and orientations for local education development after the merger.
School size increased
PV: Could you give an overview of the changes in Ca Mau's education sector after the merger?
Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen : The Department of Education and Training of Ca Mau province (new) was established under Resolution No. 12 dated July 1, 2025 of the Provincial People's Council, on the basis of merging the Department of Education and Training of Bac Lieu province and the Department of Education and Training of Ca Mau province (old). The agency is located at No. 1, Ba Trieu Street, Tan Thanh Ward, Ca Mau. The organizational structure includes: Board of Directors (1 Director, 4 Deputy Directors) and 6 specialized departments, with a total of 67 staff.
After merging the two provinces, the Education sector of Ca Mau province has 751 public schools, of which 210 are preschool schools, 314 are primary schools, 174 are secondary schools (12 have 2 levels), and 53 are high schools (16 have 2 levels).
In addition, the province has 1 Continuing Education Center; 1 Continuing Education - Career Guidance Center; 6 Continuing Education - Vocational Education Centers; 2 Centers to support the development of inclusive education; 1 University, 6 public colleges; 1 Branch of Binh Duong University in Ca Mau.
There are 26 non-public schools (21 kindergartens; 4 primary schools; 1 high school).
The whole sector has nearly 23,590 staff, teachers, and nearly 404,600 students (school year 2024-2025). As of June 30, 2025, 627/751 schools met national standards (rate 83.49%).

Reporter: After the merger, did the local education and training sector encounter any difficulties or obstacles? For schools with the same name, schools still named after the old commune, district, and province, does the sector have any plans to make appropriate changes, sir?
Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen: After the merger, the number of educational institutions, especially at the preschool and primary levels, increased rapidly, while the management area was large and there was no longer an intermediate level (Department of Education and Training), so the Department would directly provide professional guidance to the schools. Some new commune and ward officials in charge of education did not come from the industry, leading to initial difficulties.
In addition, the system of professional documents between the two old units is still different and needs to be reviewed and replaced accordingly. Investment funds for facilities are still limited; the purchase of teaching equipment according to the 2018 General Education Program is not timely.
Regarding the renaming of schools, the Ministry of Education and Training (Official Letter 1581) does not require it. However, many schools are currently named after old district/ward administrative units, so after the merger, the renaming to suit the reality will be considered and decided by the locality.
Urgently prepare for the new school year

PV: After the merger, how will the industry carry out investment, school repair, and training of staff and teachers to prepare for the new school year, sir?
Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen : To prepare for the new school year, the Education sector has proposed repairing and purchasing equipment for 22 schools with a budget of 41 billion VND. The projects are being implemented and completed to serve the 2025-2026 school year.
Currently, the industry continues to advise the authorities to repair 10 more schools with a budget of 14.6 billion VND; review and complete the Project to organize 2 sessions/day, boarding for preschool and primary schools.
Focus on implementing Decision No. 1209 of the Provincial People's Committee dated June 23, 2025 on approving the Project to build new and repair toilets in public schools in Ca Mau province by 2027.
Regarding the preparation of the teaching staff, the Ca Mau Education sector has assessed the current situation and developed a project to develop the preschool teaching staff; organized training and improved qualifications for teachers and managers, ready for the new school year 2025 - 2026.

In addition, the industry also urgently completed and announced the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam. Organized training courses for officials in charge of education in localities on the process and methods of performing decentralized tasks to effectively implement assigned tasks.
Synthesize facilities and funding needs to build a project to teach 2 sessions/day; review local educational documents that have been deployed to make appropriate adjustments to the actual situation...
PV: Thank you very much!
