The reason for the "fear" is that, for many foreign tourists, avocado is a fruit commonly used in savory dishes, and they don't eat it like Vietnamese people do, which is used to make delicious and irresistible avocado smoothies or avocado mixed with milk.
They were already surprised to learn that butter is used in Vietnamese desserts, but combining it with coffee is truly intriguing.
Butter coffee is my "holy grail"
Klaudia, a Polish tourist who has been living in Da Nang for the past few months and has a YouTube channel called Nomadic Klaudia to document her life in Vietnam, shared with Tuoi Tre Online that in Europe she only drinks Arabica coffee. Therefore, when she tried a cup of Robusta black coffee in Vietnam, she was shocked and didn't like it at all from the first try.
However, she didn't give up and tried many types, from salted coffee and egg coffee to coconut coffee, and finally found her "true love": butter coffee.

"I love eating avocados, but I never imagined they could be mixed with coffee and turned into a sweet treat. Before coming to Vietnam, I had never heard of avocado coffee, so it was a pleasant surprise," Klaudia said.
She said she learned about this dish while browsing social media and watching YouTube videos where many tourists recommended it as a must-try when visiting Vietnam.
"The flavor really surprised me. It reminded me of the avocado ice cream I used to eat, but it stimulated my taste buds more intensely thanks to the robusta coffee."
"To me, it's like a sweet, creamy dessert, balanced by the rich flavor of coffee. If you like avocado, you'll definitely love this drink, because it combines the freshness of avocado with the strength of Vietnamese coffee in a very unique way," Klaudia described.
When Klaudia shared a video of this drink on her TikTok channel @nomadicklaudia, she received many positive responses.

According to her, avocado coffee has the potential to become as famous as egg coffee or iced milk coffee, especially among tourists, thanks to the eye-catching green color of the avocado and its unique flavor.
She didn't think this type of coffee would become a daily habit for locals, as it resembled a dessert combining avocado smoothie and coffee, but for tourists, it has all the elements to become an iconic drink: unique, delicious, and unforgettable.
According to my research, butter coffee is not a drink unique to Vietnam, as countries that commonly use butter in sweets, such as Indonesia, also have similar variations.
However, thanks to the reputation of Vietnamese coffee culture, butter coffee has become a popular discovery among tourists, adding a fresh new flavor to their coffee experience during their travels in Vietnam.
For Klaudia, Vietnamese coffee is a journey of discovery: while she usually only drinks black Americano without sugar or milk, the creative variations here are like little treats she occasionally indulges in.
"That's one of the things I love about Vietnam – its rich and ever-surprising coffee culture," she shared.

I tried butter coffee out of curiosity and was hooked!
Searching for "avocado coffee Vietnam" on TikTok reveals numerous videos of foreign tourists sharing their experiences with this drink, attracting many likes and comments.
Among them is Caleb, 21, a Canadian travel blogger with the TikTok channel @journeywithcaleb.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , he said he stumbled upon this dish while traveling in Vietnam and was curious to try it, thinking it would be very unique.

According to him, the taste of this drink is like an avocado smoothie, very creamy and smooth, with just the right amount of sweetness, blended with the rich flavor of coffee.
Besides butter coffee, he also praised another "unusual" drink: banana coffee.
“Both are very similar to smoothies, with a sweet and creamy texture, combined with the rich flavor of coffee, creating a very unique experience. Honestly, I quite like them and I'm sure this is something you should try when you come to Vietnam!”, he said.
In the comments section of online videos about butter coffee, many tourists expressed their delight at this unique flavor combination.
Some people even recommend that foreign visitors try sapodilla coffee – a drink not too unfamiliar to Vietnamese people – at smoothie stalls.
However, according to Caleb, while smoothie coffees may offer an enjoyable experience, they can hardly dethrone other popular coffee drinks like milk coffee, egg coffee, coconut coffee, etc.
“Vietnam has some of the best coffee I’ve ever had! Salted coffee is perfectly balanced with sweetness and richness, milk coffee is another great option, even black coffee has a hint of tiramisu flavor with a smoky undertone, coconut coffee is truly in a league of its own, and finally, egg coffee – a must-try,” he rattled off.
