Khe Sanh Coffee: A Centenary March

There are flavors that are not just meant to be tasted, but to be remembered, to be cherished. Khe Sanh coffee is one such flavor – a unique taste distilled from the red basalt soil and the scorching Lao wind.

From "Coordinates of Fire" to the Taste of Peace

Sitting in a small cafe in Khe Sanh, Quang Tri , sipping a steaming cup of fragrant coffee, gazing out at the majestic Victory Monument, one suddenly realizes a miracle has emerged from the past. More than half a century ago, this place was ravaged by bombs and bullets, but now it is truly peaceful, with birds chirping as they greet the dawn amidst the swirling white clouds of the Truong Son mountain range.

The history of Khe Sanh coffee is a special chapter in the chronicle of the Khe Sanh, Huong Phung, and Huong Hoa regions of Quang Tri province. In 1926, French botanist Eugene Poilane – who had described over 36,000 plant species for the National Museum of Natural History in Paris – planted the first coffee seeds in the red basalt soil of Khe Sanh. From the early Typica and Boubou varieties, enduring the vicissitudes of two wars of resistance against the French and the Americans, the coffee plant, along with the people of Khe Sanh, weathered scorching suns and storms of war to revive and establish its brand worldwide .

The verdant hues of peace stretch across the hills of Khe Sanh – a place that was once a "hotbed of conflict" during the war.

If the Battle of Route 9 - Khe Sanh in 1968 once held the world's breath, today, the endless green of the Arabica coffee fields in Huong Phung, Tan Lap, A Doi... inspires awe at its miraculous resurgence. Khe Sanh coffee is no longer just a product of the old plantations of yesteryear, but the "flavor of peace" - an aroma distilled from Mother Earth and the indomitable spirit of the local people. Each cup of Khe Sanh coffee is not simply a beverage, but a story told through the fragrance of the red basalt soil and the bittersweet taste of life. In every rich drop of coffee lies the sweat of the Van Kieu and Pa Co people who cling to the hills and protect the land; the aspirations for survival and the quiet faith of those who migrated to the new economic zones and dedicated their youth to these verdant coffee plantations. Over the years, the coffee plant has become an integral part of this land, embodying the pride and honor of Quang Tri province.

Miracles are born from harsh realities.

Quang Tri's land is not easy to please, with its scorching hot winds from Laos, skin-burning sun, and incessant rains that constantly test the endurance of both people and nature. Yet, amidst this harshness, on the hillsides of Khe Sanh, Huong Phung, Tan Lien..., coffee plants still persevere, silently burying their roots deep in the fertile red basalt soil, carefully absorbing every drop of the mother earth's silt, every wisp of mountain mist, and the sun and wind of the vast forest to produce clusters of bright red, plump berries, like precious jewels of the Truong Son mountain range.

Each Khe Sanh coffee bean is steeped in the sweat and aspirations of the ethnic minority people living here.

What makes Khe Sanh coffee so appealing is its unique flavor profile, created by the region's rare "micro-advantages." Theoretically, Arabica coffee grows ideally at altitudes above 1,000m. However, in Huong Phung, the "coffee capital" of Khe Sanh, located at only 500-900m above sea level, the coffee plants still produce top-quality beans thanks to the basin-shaped terrain and a diurnal temperature difference of 7-9°C.

It is these unique natural conditions that give Khe Sanh coffee its unmistakable flavor. The Arabica beans here captivate coffee lovers with their delicate acidity, subtle fruity notes, and gentle, sweet aftertaste. Meanwhile, Khe Sanh Robusta beans are rich and strong, embodying the enduring and resilient spirit of the people of the fiery land of Quang Tri.

Liberica coffee from the Khe Sanh highlands of Huong Hoa district is establishing its position on the world map of specialty coffees.

The vitality of Khe Sanh coffee today is not only due to the elegance of the renowned Arabica variety, but also to the proud revival of once-forgotten coffee varieties. Prominent among them is Liberica coffee – a unique "treasure" of the Khe Sanh, Huong Hoa, and Huong Phung highlands. This rare variety is difficult to cultivate, and its limited yield makes it even more valuable. In return, Liberica possesses a very distinct flavor, deeply rooted in the Truong Son mountain range, with a powerful and unmistakable wildness.

From those seemingly forgotten coffee beans, many local brands such as Madam Huong, Pun Coffee, and coffee products from the Bru - Van Kieu ethnic group have boldly chosen the path of "specialty-ization," gradually elevating Khe Sanh coffee's status in the market. The gold awards won by Khe Sanh coffee at regional competitions in Southeast Asia are not only recognition of its quality but also affirm the immense potential of each coffee bean born from the red basalt soil of Khe Sanh.

Accompanying this journey is the pioneering role of new-style cooperatives, exemplified by the Khe Sanh Agricultural Products Cooperative under the leadership of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang. From small-scale individual producers, more than 100 households of the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic minorities have been connected in a sustainable value chain, where modern farming techniques blend with local experience. The dedication of those who love and are deeply connected to the Quang Tri region has helped Khe Sanh coffee overcome the instability of traditional production methods, gradually establishing its position as a specialty coffee on the international market and opening up a promising future for this local coffee brand.

In 2026, marking the 100th anniversary of coffee's arrival in the Khe Sanh region, the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to organize a series of activities titled "Following in the Footsteps of 100 Years of Khe Sanh Coffee." This is not merely a trade promotion activity, but a cultural and artistic space of international stature.

The highlight of the series of activities is the artistic and political program "Peace Coffee - Make Coffee Not War," taking place in Khe Sanh on the night of October 24, 2026. Through the language of music, light, and emotion, the program will tell the story of a century of coffee beans: from their journey across the sea to the red basalt soil of western Quang Tri; from an exotic plant to a symbol of vitality, rebirth, and the aspiration for peace in a land once ravaged by war.

Within the framework of the event, visitors and locals will be immersed in the exhibition space "Memories of 100 Years of Khe Sanh Coffee," where valuable documentary films and historical artifacts will be screened. In particular, the participation of coffee-growing localities from neighboring Laos will create an interesting cultural exchange along the East-West Economic Corridor.
The century-long journey of Khe Sanh coffee is entering a new chapter with "digital transformation" and "sustainable development" projects. Not stopping at 5-star OCOP products, Khe Sanh coffee today is confidently venturing into the world market with its registered growing area code, digital map, and strict cultivation processes of the European Union (EUDR).

Furthermore, the trend of experiential tourism, allowing visitors to personally harvest and roast coffee beans amidst the Trường Sơn mountain range, is opening a new chapter for the livelihoods of ethnic minority communities in the region. This also reflects the aspiration of the Quảng Trị provincial leadership to find the perfect blend of economy and culture, of conservation and development.

A century has passed, yet the aroma of Khe Sanh coffee still gently permeates the air, serving as the most vivid testament to the land of Khe Sanh. From the pain of war, life has sprouted and blossomed into the flavor of peace – a flavor that tells a story, a proud tale of human aspiration and the miraculous rebirth of the land.

Come to Khe Sanh, to sip a hot cup of coffee, listen to the mountain wind tell stories of centuries past, and see how a land once reeking of bombs and bullets has truly been reborn, vibrant and captivating in the green hues of peace.

The People's Committee of Quang Tri province has issued Plan No. 1733/KH-UBND dated April 3, 2026, to organize activities under the theme "Following in the Footsteps of 100 Years of Khe Sanh Coffee" within the framework of the 2026 Peace Festival, aiming to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the formation and development of Khe Sanh coffee (1926 - 2026). Accordingly, the series of activities aims to introduce and promote the brand value of Khe Sanh coffee; honor coffee growers, processors, and traders; and contribute to spreading the image of Quang Tri province, a land and people rich in historical traditions, dynamic, and friendly.
