Gayle Erasmus witnessed a remarkable hunting scene on the Sabie River bridge in the southern Lower Sabie area of Kruger National Park, South Africa, Latest Sightings reported on October 5th. Gayle Erasmus and other tourists in the group were running across the low bridge when the loud splashing of water caught their attention. They were astonished to see a crocodile catch a python. Erasmus could not determine whether the crocodile had just subdued the python or if the python had already died.

To tear the python's carcass into bite-sized pieces, the crocodile tossed the python around on the water's surface. Then, it swam towards the shore and struggled to eat the python. Finally, it moved to deeper water hidden by reeds and disappeared there.

Crocodiles typically feed on fish, birds, and mammals. They are excellent underwater predators, often lurking beneath murky water and leaping to capture their prey. However, they are also opportunistic hunters and will readily eat pythons and snakes if possible. Crocodiles have a unique way of eating because they cannot chew. By tearing pythons into pieces, crocodiles can more easily swallow them whole.

The Nile crocodile is the largest crocodile in Africa and the second largest in the world after the saltwater crocodile. On average, an adult can be 2.8-5 meters long and weigh 70-700 kg. This species of crocodile has a total of 64-68 sharp teeth in its mouth. Throughout its life, it can grow new teeth if any are broken. Nile crocodiles can eat prey weighing up to half their own body weight at a time.
