Faced with heavy rain and rapid water flow into reservoirs, hydroelectric plants in Ha Tinh are trying to generate electricity at maximum capacity while proactively regulating spillway discharge to ensure safety for downstream areas.
Ho Ho Hydropower Plant (Huong Khe) has a capacity of 14MW with 2 generators. From April to early September 2023, rainfall in the area was insignificant, so the water level in the reservoir was low, greatly affecting the power generation process of the plant.
Therefore, the unit can only operate 1 generator with low output. In the first 8 months of 2023, Ho Ho Hydropower Plant generated 14.181 million kWh of electricity to the national grid (while in the same period in 2022 it was 18.4 million kWh).
Ho Ho Hydropower Plant has been releasing water since 9:00 p.m. on September 25.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Tuan - Deputy Director of Ho Ho Hydropower Plant said: "In recent days, there has been heavy rain upstream, the water flow into the reservoir has increased rapidly. This is a condition for the plant to operate and generate electricity, increasing revenue. Accordingly, from September 25, 2023, the plant will operate 2 units with an electricity output of 250,000 kWh/day, while before the beginning of September, the unit could only generate 25,000 - 30,000 kWh/day. In September alone, the plant strives to generate 4 million kWh of electricity to the grid."
To ensure the safety of the project and stable operation of the generators, at this time the factory continues to strictly maintain the inspection regime of construction items such as: two dam shoulders, dam access road, factory access road, downstream... At the same time, focus on performing well the operation of equipment such as: backup diesel generator to ensure continuous power supply, operate the supply gate valve according to regulations...
Ho Ho Hydropower Plant operates 2 units synchronously with an electricity output of 250,000 kWh/day.
“In addition to the task of generating electricity and serving production and business, the plant is currently focusing on solutions to ensure safety for the downstream area. Ho Ho Hydropower Plant started releasing spillway from 9pm on September 25 with a flow rate of 26m3 /second. By 8am on September 27, the water flow through the spillway increased to 22m3 /second,” added Mr. Nguyen Ba Tuan.
At Huong Son Hydropower Plant (Son Kim 1 Commune), for many months now, we have been facing a shortage of water for electricity production. The water level in the reservoir is always below or close to the dead water level, so at times the plant can only operate one unit and for a few hours a day. In recent days, there has been heavy rain in Huong Son, the water flow to the Cold Water Reservoir has increased, so the plant has taken advantage of generating electricity to make up for the long period of "cutting your coat according to your cloth".
Currently, the water level at the Cold Water Reservoir is 800.30 m (1.8 m higher than the dead water level).
Mr. Ngo Xuan Manh - Manager of Huong Son Hydropower Plant said: "Thanks to heavy rainfall, the water flow to the lake has increased significantly compared to before. Currently, the water level at the Nuoc Lanh reservoir is 800.3 m (1.8 m higher than the dead water level). Accordingly, the plant has deployed 2 generators at the same time with maximum capacity (33MW), generating nearly 750,000 kWh/day to the national grid, while in the past few months, each day has only generated 200,000 - 300,000 kWh".
It is known that in the first 8 months of 2023, Huong Son Hydropower Plant has produced 45.269 million kWh. In September alone, the plant strives to produce 8.2 million kWh, bringing the output in the first 9 months of the year to 53.469 million kWh. The plant's target in 2023 is to produce 115 million kWh. However, in the past few months, there has been a lack of water and low output, so from now on, the plant will make the most of its water resources for production. The priority solutions are to focus all resources on stably and continuously operating 2 units at maximum capacity while ensuring the safety of equipment.

In the coming days, based on the water flow into the lake, Huong Son Hydropower Plant will proactively deploy appropriate safe operation plans depending on the specific practical situation. If the rainfall continues to be heavy, the water level in the Cold Water Reservoir rises to 804m, the plant will deploy spillway regulation to ensure safety for the downstream area.
