Scientists from Kyung Hee University and Yonsei University (Korea) conducted a study to find out the relationship between coffee consumption and sugar metabolism in the body.

They analyzed data from 7,453 people aged 19 to 64, with an average age of nearly 41, from the 2019–2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES).

Participants reported the amount and type of coffee they consumed each day. The type of coffee reported included black coffee without sugar or coffee with sugar (including sweetened condensed milk) or cream.

Depending on the amount of coffee consumed, participants were divided into four groups:

  • No coffee.
  • Drink 1 cup/day.
  • Drink 2 cups/day.
  • Drink 3 or more cups/day.

2 cups of coffee a day help improve insulin resistance

Results found that drinking 2 cups of coffee a day improved insulin resistance and better sugar metabolism.

In particular, black coffee without sugar is most effective, with 2 cups of black coffee without sugar per day being best for blood sugar levels, especially in women.

From 3 cups of unsweetened black coffee or more, the benefits do not increase significantly.

The authors concluded: Drinking two cups of unsweetened black coffee a day is best for reducing insulin resistance and improving sugar metabolism, especially in women, according to News Medical.

The researchers also said that more future studies are needed to further validate these results.
