From 19h45 to 23h on May 20 to 26, all vehicles are prohibited from going through the Saigon River tunnel to practice fire fighting and rescue, according to the announcement of the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City.
In addition to the above time, from 7:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 27 and 28, the river crossing tunnel is also closed in both directions to organize city-scale drills.
Alternative routes for cars from District 1 to Thu Duc City: Vo Van Kiet Street – parallel – Vo Van Kiet – Ton Duc Thang – Ba Son Bridge (Thu Thiem 2) – To Huu – Mai Chi Tho. In the opposite direction, the car follows Mai Chi Tho - To Huu - Ba Son bridge - Le Duan - Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Vo Van Kiet.
Firefighting and rescue drills are an annual work at the tunnel crossing the Saigon River, in order to improve proactiveness and minimize damage when fires and explosions occur. In addition to rehearsals to handle situations, an automatic fire extinguishing system was installed in the tunnel to promptly handle arising incidents.
The tunnel crossing the Saigon River is invested more than 2.000 billion VND, put into operation 12 years ago, is the most important item of the East-West Highway. The tunnel is 1,49 km long, 33 m wide, 9 m high with 6 lanes (3 lanes on each side for cars and motorbikes); speed reaches 60 km/h. Currently, every day, about 55.000 cars and 300.000 motorbikes pass through the tunnel.
